Sri Lanka take on Bangladesh in match 5 of Asia Cup 2022 in Dubai on September 1, Thursday. This is the second group game for both teams from group A. The Lankans lost their first group game against Afghanistan in the campaign opener. Bangladesh were also beaten by the Afghans who became the first team to qualify for the Super 4 winning two back to back games. India, Pakistan and Hong Kong make up group B.
A total of 13 matches will take place during the tournament. India are the defending champions of the tournament, which won the title back in 2018 by defeating Bangladesh in the final. India have also won the most 7 Asia Cup titles so far. Sri Lanka comes next with 5 titles while Pakistan has won 2 titles.
During the group stage, each team will play one match against the teams in their group. The top 2 teams from both groups will qualify for the super four round. During the super 4 round, each team will play one match against each other. The top two teams will qualify for the final which will be played on September 11. Bangladesh have made the final of the Asia Cup in the last two editions but lost out to India both times.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka were rocked in the first game with Afghanistan beating them by 8 wickets. The batters could only score 105 which the opposition batsmen chased down inside 11 overs. The batters let them down in their first game and it is they who need to bail them out in this one. The match will be played in Dubai which is a bigger ground. The batsmen need to put up a score around 160 to 170 to bring their bowlers into the game. This is a must-win game for the side. A loss against Bangladesh would end their Asia Cup campaign.

The side will be led by Shakib Al Hasan. He is himself under the scanner for not playing consistent cricket for the side. The side has lost against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe this year with Shakib not leading the side in those two bilateral series.
He is now nominated as the skipper of the side for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. Shakib is looking forward to leading the side in this tournament and building up to the T20 World Cup.
“I have no goals. My only aim is that we can do well in the (T20) World Cup and these are the preparations for it. If someone thinks that I can change things within one or two days or that someone else will come to change it, then we are living in a fool’s kingdom.”
“If you are able to think practically, our true development will be seen when the team really does well in the World Cup in three months’ time” said Shakib on his captaincy.
