WWE Raw Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 19

Sana Ejaz Khan

WWE dealt with all of the fallout from WrestleMania 37 last week, so this week's show was all about building up WrestleMania Backlash on May 16. Why they added WrestleMania to the Backlash name is still a mystery.

After attacking Asuka and Rhea Ripley last week following her return to the red brand, Charlotte found herself in a one-on-one contest with The Empress on Monday.

Drew McIntyre earned a WWE title shot last week, but MVP orchestrated an attack by T-Bar and Mace to soften him up. This week, The Scottish Warrior was looking for answers.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of WWE Raw.

The Viking Raiders vs. Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin

1 OF 7

Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander faced Erik and Ivar in a rematch from their encounter on last week's show. Benjamin and Erik started for their teams.

Surprisingly, Benjamin overpowered the biking and brought in Alexander for a double-team. The former members of The Hurt Business maintained control with quick tags to keep themselves fresh. Erik uncorked a huge right hand so he could tag in Ivar.

The big man missed a splash and allowed Alexander and Benjamin to regain the upper hand almost immediately.

A few moments later, The Viking Raiders were able to turn things around and get the win with The Viking Experience.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

While it's great to see Alexander and Benjamin being portrayed as competent wrestlers, it makes no sense why they controlled so much of the action.

Erik and Ivar just returned last week. If WWE wants to rebuild them, they should be destroying tag teams with little to no effort. They don't have to squash every team they face. They just need to look like the powerhouses they are.

The match was decent but ended up being on the short side. Erik and Ivar only got in a little bit of offense toward the end. The match they had last week had a similar issue but it wasn't as glaring because they had more time.

Randy Orton vs. Riddle

2 OF 7

During a backstage interview, Randy Orton was interrupted by Riddle. He immediately went to Adam Pearce and demanded a match despite having no idea who Riddle was.

The Viper took control but when he went for a suplex, Riddle countered into a sleeper. Orton pulled him off his back by his hair. Riddle went right back to the same hold, so Orton backed him into the corner. Riddle went for it a third time.

The Legend Killer dropped onto his back to break the hold, but Riddle grabbed him a fourth time. He forced Orton to roll out of the ring. He caught Riddle's kick from the apron and tripped him before dropping him onto the announce table.

We came back from a commercial to see Orton stomping on Riddle's feet repeatedly. The Bro fired back with some strikes before The Viper planted him with a powerslam for a two-count. He followed up with a vertical suplex and a thumb to the eye when Riddle tried to mount a comeback.

The former MMA fighter unloaded with a series of punches and forearms, but one Irish whip into the corner from Orton put him back down. The Legend Killer hit the ring post when Riddle avoided a shoulder in the corner, allowing the former U.S. champion to get in some offense.

The Bro was able to avoid the RKO and rolled Orton up for the upset win.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

Orton singlehandedly made the backstage segments with Riddle funny. His reaction to the scooter and pretending to not know who Riddle was when he requested the match were legitimately hilarious.

The match they had ended up being highly entertaining. The Viper controlled most of the action but when Riddle had the upper hand, he made the most of it.

The Viper has reached the point in his career where he can do more good getting other people over. He might be the one person who can make a feud with Riddle entertaining for everyone, even the people who dislike The Bro.

They had good chemistry both in the ring and as opposite personalities backstage. If this feud continues, it should only get better from here.

Lana and Naomi vs. Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax

3 OF 7

Naomi started off this tag team match against Nia Jax. She hit a few kicks before tagging in Lana. Jax overpowered both women when they went for a double Irish whip, but the neon warriors managed to keep her under control with quick tags and a few double-team moves.

They went for a suplex and Jax ended up suplexing both of them instead. Baszler tagged in and leveled Lana for a two-count. Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke came out and played a few embarrassing clips of Jax as a distraction.

Jax angrily ignored a tag from Baszler and went after Rose and Brooke, leaving her partner high and dry. Naomi got the tag and hit a double facebuster with Lana for the win.

    Grade: D+

    Analysis

The first minute of this match was actually some solid tag team wrestling. It went downhill from there due to the distraction by Rose and Brooke.

Shenanigans are fine, but they have to make sense. Jax is a champion. She shouldn't be suckered into doing something that stupid so easily.

Also, what did Rose and Brooke gain by helping another team get a win. If anything, this would allow Naomi and Lana to request a title match before them.

The women's tag team division is booked with almost no effort behind it, which is a shame because there are some talented Superstars who aren't being used to their full potential.

Elias vs. Kofi Kingston

4 OF 7

Elias and Jaxson Ryker were back for another performance, but they were once again interrupted by The New Day. This time, Xavier Woods was playing bass instead of a trombone.

Elias hit Kofi Kingston with a running knee as soon as the bell rang for a quick two-count. He stayed on the former WWE champion and grounded him with strikes.

Woods distracted him with some bass notes so Kingston could take control. Elias dropped him across the top rope to stop him in his tracks. Kingston recovered and hit a flying crossbody for a near-fall.

They screwed up the SOS but eventually hit it for a close two-count. Elias countered a hurricanrana and hit a flying elbow drop for the clean win.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

Most of this short match was decent, but they started to fall apart toward the end. The SOS botch and a few other moments stood out as sloppy.

It looks like Ryker and Elias will continue to feud with The New Day for the time being. What's strange is WWE seems to have two non-title feuds going in the Raw tag team division while Omos and AJ Styles have been unused since winning the Raw tag titles at WrestleMania.

Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman vs. Mace and T-Bar

5 OF 7

Drew McIntyre came to the ring as soon as the show started to call out MVP for orchestrating an attack against him last week with T-Bar and Mace. It didn't take long for MVP to come out for a response.

He said McIntyre is just mad that Bobby Lashley put him out at WrestleMania and told him to expect the unexpected. MVP said Mace and T-Bar are not associated with The Hurt Business after him but McIntyre did not believe him.

The Scottish Warrior approached MVP but before he reached him, Mace and T-Bar attacked him again. They hit a double chokeslam as MVP looked on. They walked right past him on the ramp as they headed to the back. After a break, McIntyre asked Pearce to book a fight against Mace and T-Bar.

The handicap match got started at the top of the third hour. McIntyre went right after T-Bar and brought him to a neutral corner to beat him down. T-Bar made the tag and Mace nailed a huge uppercut for a two-count.

The former Retribution members started to dominate the former WWE champion. McIntyre hit a spinebuster for a two-count as he started to rally. Mace and T-Bar double-teamed him until the ref called for the bell. That is when Braun Strowman's music hit and he came out to make the save.

After a break, we returned to see this turned into a tag team match. McIntyre smiled as The Monster Among Men destroyed Mace. Eventually, Mace and T-Bar took the big man down.

McIntyre tagged in and ripped Mace's mask off. He used it as a weapon against Mace and got himself disqualified. Strowman ripped off T-Bar's mask before they left.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

The opening segment of the show was a good exchange between MVP and McIntyre, but the match that it spawned was mediocre at best.

The best part of this was seeing T-Bar and Mace look like an actual threat to McIntyre. They are both bigger than he is, so it would have been ridiculous if he dominated them like he would most other opponents.

Why is Strowman helping McIntyre? They were just in a match last week as opponents. They have never shown any signs of being friends, so this felt extremely random.

Ending both matches in disqualifications was a bad choice but it will be more acceptable if Mace and T-Bar keep the masks off and go back to their old names.

The Miz vs. Damian Priest

6 OF 7

The Miz was out next with Maryse for an episode of Miz TV. John Morrison was nowhere to be seen as he started talking about making Bad Bunny a household name. He even took credit for Bunny's tour selling out. They also bragged about their reality show's ratings.

They flirted with each other and kissed as firework went off in the Thunderdome. The Miz plugged an upcoming WWE documentary about him and tried to propose a toast to himself, but he was interrupted by Damian Priest.

The Archer of Infamy made a joke about The Miz being about as real of a fighter as Jake Paul before he mocked him for losing his pants last week. Maryse ended up accepting a challenge on her husband's behalf.

Priest started off strong and immediately put The A-Lister on defense. A distraction from Maryse allowed The Miz to throw him into the barricade. He nailed Priest with a double ax handle from the top rope and a series of punches.

Priest blocked the It Kicks with an elbow strike and hit a senton from the middle rope. After kicking out of a dirty pin, Priest hit his finisher for the win.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

On one of the weaker shows in recent memory, this ended up being one of the strongest segments of the night. That says a lot about the state of Raw right now.

This match was fine for what it was. Priest picked up the clean win even with Maryse there to provide some distractions. Morrison's absence went unexplained.

Priest needs to move on from this quickly. He should be chasing the U.S. title, not keeping up his feud from WrestleMania.

Asuka vs. Charlotte

7 OF 7

Charlotte gave a promo during the first hour where she called the women backstage "Rats who don't actually like each other." Asuka and Rhea Ripley came out but nothing much happened from there.

The Queen and The Empress finally met in the main event of the evening. They locked up and came to a stalemate a few times before Asuka finally took control with some kicks to the body. Charlotte avoided a hip strike and nailed her with a boot to the face.

Both women went down hard after a neckbreaker on the apron. It was hard to tell who was supposed to come out on top in that one. We returned from a break moments before Asuka began to build some momentum. She hit a nice German suplex and a running kick for a close two-count.

Charlotte avoided the Asukalock and applied the Figure Eight. Ripley caused her to break the hold while the ref was checking on Asuka, and that allowed The Empress to roll Charlotte up for the win. The Queen attacked the official after the match and beat him down. Even two other refs couldn't make her stop until she wanted to.

    Grade: B

    Analysis

Like her father, Charlotte was born to be a heel. She is so much better at it than she is at being a babyface, and she is much more valuable as an obstacle for another face to overcome because The Queen will never be an underdog.

These two have great chemistry as opponents, but there were a few moments when it looked like they were trying to rush, leading to a couple of minor mistakes. For the most part, they looked good.

Seeing Rhea Ripley circle the ring like a shark eyeing her prey gave this bout an extra level of unpredictability. You can never tell if she is going to attack or just keep watching these two beat each other up.

On any other night, the way this match ended would have been fine, but this week featured too many disqualifications and instances of interference. This was a weak show with only a few highlights worth taking the time to watch if you did not tune in live.

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Highlights and Analysis from April 16

Sana Ejaz Khan

Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee joined Michael Cole at the commentary table Friday night for the SmackDown after WrestleMania 37, where Roman Reigns dominated the competition and defeated both Edge and Daniel Bryan to retain the Universal Championship.

How did the former No. 1 contenders look to rebound and what did The Head of the Table have to say in the wake of his emphatic victory?

Find out now with this recap of a Friday’s broadcast, which also featured a big tag team title defense by Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, as well as the latest in the rivalry between the Mysterios and Alpha Academy.

Match Card

1 OF 8

    Announced for Friday's show:

    • SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Street Profits vs. Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode
    • Rey Mysterio (with Dominik) vs. Otis (with Chad Gable)

    Coverage begins at 8 p.m.

The Head of the Table at the Start of the Show

2 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Universal champion Roman Reigns, flanked by "The Right Hand Man" Jey Uso and Paul Heyman, kicked off Friday's episode of SmackDown.

Heyman put over Daniel Bryan and Edge's Hall of Fame credentials before handing the mic over to The Tribal Chief. The champion said no one wants to fight him because of what he does to Hall of Famers. He humbles them and no one wants any part of that.

He ordered Heyman to tell WWE to cut the check and fire up the jet because he's out of there.

Before they could leave, Cesaro made his way to the ring. Before he could address The Head of the Table, Cesaro watched as Reigns, Uso, and Heyman exited, refusing to acknowledge the new threat to the title.

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

Reigns as the uber-arrogant heel who touts his own dominance despite interference from Uso is simply outstanding. He was so confident in himself following his win over Edge and Bryan that he suggested no one in their right mind wanted to face him.

When Cesaro stepped up, he turned tail and refused to acknowledge the existence of his potential opponent.

Ironic, considering Reigns' constant insistence that he is acknowledged himself

Cesaro is exactly the right challenger at exactly the right time. While there is a minuscule likelihood he dethrones Reigns, a feud with The Big Dog is exactly the sort of program that will continue to establish The Swiss Superman as a genuine main event performer and credible title contender.

Rey Mysterio vs. Otis

3 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The rivalry between the Mysterios and Alpha Academy continued Friday as the massive Otis battled WWE’s biggest little man, Rey Mysterio.

The future Hall of Famer overcame the strength advantage of his opponent, rocking him with a running knee. Moments later, he dropped Otis across the middle rope and delivered the 619.

Mysterio launched himself from the top rope but Otis caught him. Mysterio shifted his weight, forced a rollup, and scored the win.

    Result

    Mysterio defeated Otis

    Grade

    C-

    Analysis

There wasn’t much to this one, nor did it particularly advance the ongoing rivalry between the two teams. It was, instead, a match that existed solely to remind fans the duos continue to feud.

There is an argument to be made that Otis should not be losing, especially as WWE tries to build him into a dominant big man heel, but the company has never hesitated to book finishes like this one, regardless of the repercussions on the talent.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

4 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Sami Zayn made his way to the ring and wasted little time spouting conspiracy theories and excuses for his loss at WrestleMania, laying the blame at the feet of Logan Paul. He would not be denied his vindication, he said, and demanded a match with Kevin Owens.

“There’s no one to provide a distraction, no way for you to steal a win,” he said before Owens made his way to the ring.

Owens took the fight to Zayn after the break, pummeling him on the floor. Zayn created separation and seized control of the match, driving Owens throat-first into the ring ropes. KO fought back and sent Zayn bouncing off the top rope with a release front suplex.

The competitors fought to the top rope, where Zayn stunned his former friend and delivered a sunset flip powerbomb for a near-fall as the show headed back to the break.

Owens flattened Zayn and added a swanton bomb as the show returned from the commercial.

Zayn tried to bail out of the ring but Owens brought him back in and delivered a fisherman neckberaker for across the knee for two. Zayn evaded one stunned and raked the eyes of his opponent. Zayn escaped up the ramp, gladly losing via countout.

Owens rushed the ramp, fought Zayn back to the ring and delivered a stunner to put an exclamation point on things.

After the match, cameras caught up with new Intercontinental champion Apollo Crews and his new associate, Commander Azeez. Crews christened the move formerly known as the Samoan Spike, used by Azeez, as the Nigerian Nail.

    Result

    Owens defeated Zayn via countout

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Even a relatively mundane Owens-Zayn match is still pretty damn good, a testament to the performers and their chemistry with each other.

This was hurt by the commercial breaks and the fact that the match was broken into pieces, with no real chance to establish flow or any story to speak of. Still, it was an entertaining romp that didn’t really add to the feud, but damn sure ensured it will continue.

Look for the latest chapter as soon as the Backlash pay-per-view on May 16 as neither really has anything else better to do between now and then.

SmackDown Women's Championship CelebrationThe Street Profits Made Their Way to T

5 OF 8

    Credit: WWE

The Street Profits made their way to the ring for a SmackDown Women’s Championship celebration featuring Brianca Belair but first, threw to a beautifully produced video package highlighting The EST’s win over Sasha Banks at WrestleMania.

From there, the new champion made her way to the ring, joining husband Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins in the ring for her first promo as new titleholder.

Belair said she feels like she has been floating since WrestleMania, then said calling herself The EST is not cockiness or arrogance. It’s just about being herself. She reminded Banks that she left her with a little something to remember her by if she tries to step to her again.

Belair ended her celebration by telling Ford to go get the tag titles because “we only wear gold in this house.”

An infuriated Banks walked out on an interview with Kayla Braxton and moments later, Bayley spoke to the reporter, issuing a challenge to Belair for a title opportunity.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

This was never meant to be anything more than a celebratory promo from Belair and in that regard, it worked. She was overjoyed, charismatic and made sure those potentially tuning in for the first time knew exactly what she is all about.

Banks being infuriated makes sense, as does Bayley’s attempt to jump right back into the title picture without earning her way there. Both brief glimpses of the future of the division were true to those particular characters and set Belair up with two ready-made programs.

There are far worse ways to spotlight your new champion than by having her battle two of the most decorated and celebrated women of all time.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match

6 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The SmackDown Tag Team Championships were up for grabs in the night’s next match as Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode defended against The Street Profits. Ford and Dawkins rolled early, taking the fight to the champions and leaving them reeling ahead of the night’s latest commercial break.

The champions worked over Dawkins, isolating him from his partner and keeping him grounded. The big man caught Ziggler, launched him into the ring post with a slingshot and inched toward Ford.

The lightning-quick babyface downed both competitors with dropkicks, then added a clothesline for good measure. A standing moonsault to Roode nearly earned Ford the victory but the champion shot his shoulder off the mat for two.

Dawkins flattened Roode and Ford delivered the frog splash, but Ziggler broke up the pin. As the babyfaces rolled, Ziggler executed a blind tag and dropped Ford with a Zig Zag for the pinfall victory and successful title retention.

    Result

Ziggler and Roode defeated The Street Profits

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Just when you thought it was a given that WWE would follow up Belair’s win with her husband Ford’s tag title victory, the company pulls the carpet out from under you by booking a clean heel victory.

    And with good reason.

Ziggler and Roode need the credibility. Yes, they are tag team champions but they don’t exactly have a long and illustrious run with the titles. They needed a definitive win and after last week’s Fatal 4-Way victory, this straight tag match win further solidifies their status as the top team in the division.

With that said, theirs is definitely a reign that feels like it could end any given week. Considering how popular the Street Profits are, not to mention the potential of the Mysterios and Alpha Academy, their run with the titles may not be all that long-lived.

Natalya vs. Shayna Baszler

7 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Natalya battled Shayna Baszler in the night’s next match.

The Queen of Harts survived an early onslaught by The Submission Magician and built momentum for herself. Nia Jax, sensing things were not going in her partner’s favor, hopped on the apron to provide a distraction.

Natalya shook it off and sent her opponent into her own tag team partner. Natalya scored the rollup victory for the pin-fall victory.

After the match, Tamina rocked Jax with a super kick and stood tall with her partner to close out the segment.

    Result

    Natalya defeated Baszler

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

This was certainly a thing that happened.

The match did nothing to benefit Natalya in that it was such a fluke rollup that no one will buy it seriously. Tamina rocking Jax wasn’t even a particularly cool development because we saw the two exchange blows at WrestleMania.

This was a retread that accomplished little and failed to build genuine excitement for the teams’ next match.

Cesaro vs. Jey Uso

8 OF 8

    Credit: WWE

The main event of the night saw Cesaro seek to prove himself as a viable contender to Roman Reigns as he battled “Main Event” Jey Uso.

Uso controlled heading into the final commercial break of the night but Cesaro fought his way back into the match. He delivered a deadlift suplex to the awe of the commentary team and added a springboard corkscrew uppercut for a two-count.

Uso kicked his way out of the swing, but ate another uppercut. He recovered and delivered a neckbreaker for a near-fall.

Uso talked trash, slapping Cesaro repeatedly. The Swiss Superman added a flurry of strikes, stunning Uso and following up with a clothesline for another near-fall as Michael Cole touted the toughness of the contest. Cesaro downed Uso and delivered the swing, only for Seth Rollins to attack from out of nowhere.

The Architect, seething following his WrestleMania loss, left Cesaro lying. At the top of the ramp, he said nothing was settled between them because he is the “end all, be all of this industry.”

    Result

    Cesaro defeated Uso via disqualification

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Cesaro and Uso were hitting their stride just as Rollins interfered, robbing fans of a definitive conclusion of the match.

What Rollins’ victory does is set up a potential three-way feud over the Universal Championship or, at the very least, keeps the prospects of Cesaro challenging alive while he settles things with Rollins.

The concern is that WWE will do what it does and book a finish in Cesaro’s inevitable next match with Rollins in which all of the goodwill built at WrestleMania is lost as The Architect gets his win back. It will be imperative for WWE to avoid that particular finish or risk leaving fans wondering why it even bothered to put The Swiss Superman over on wrestling’s biggest stage.

The absence of Reigns at the end of the show would seem to suggest Cesaro may not be his next pay-per-view opponent. Though, the lack of Edge and Bryan on tonight’s show would seem to suggest they’re out of the picture, too.
