WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 20

WWE NXT started off Tuesday night with a big show that included surprises, title changes and fresh faces to the black-and-gold brand. Continuing that evolution of NXT, the April 20 edition promised more title matches and a huge debut.

Just two weeks after his vicious war with Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly returned to NXT. Last week, fans saw new footage of Adam Cole and KOR both heading to a local medical facility. What would he have to say after putting Undisputed Era behind him?

Kushida wanted to repay the opportunity he was given last week when he answered Santos Escobar's open challenge and became the NXT cruiserweight champion. He offered an open challenge to any cruiserweight that wanted a fresh chance to succeed.

Much has been said of Sarray over the past month, but the time for talk has passed. The Warrior of the Sun finally arrived in NXT in a match with NXT's most impressive recent newcomer, Zoey Stark.

Dexter Lumis has long sought an opportunity at the NXT North American Championship. LA Knight took that away from him at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. The Tortured Artist wanted his revenge against the loudmouth.

This was to be a night built around the future of NXT. Many of the stars on this card have rarely had an opportunity, and they sought the chance to take their own game to the next level.

Cameron Grimes Fails to Establish a Business Relationship with Kyle O'Reilly

1 OF 8

Kyle O'Reilly put Adam Cole behind him. He was ready to move forward. He made clear his focus was on the NXT Champion held by Karrion Kross. Cameron Grimes interrupted KOR, wanting to set up a business relationship with the man.

While O'Reilly almost agreed to the alliance, he revealed he was cleared to compete and knew exactly who he wanted to face first. He hit The Technical Savage in the face before taking Grimes' hat.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This was not the way it seemed this promo would go. Kross vs. KOR could be a massive match in the near future, and O'Reilly likely still has unfinished business with Cole. Grimes' arrival was more of a one-off than an angle that will go anywhere long term.

The Technical Savage has been fun in this new role, and he brought out a fun side of KOR. However, that joy will likely vanish again when he is ready to work the main event again. This is mostly making up for Roderick Strong's story with Grimes abruptly ending.

Dexter Lumis vs. LA Knight

2 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

LA Knight learned from a few early mistakes, mocking Dexter Lumis too much. The Tortured Artist had him on the run until the loudmouth heel was able to ground Lumis. Outside, Knight sent Lumis hard into the barricade.

As The Tortured Artist tried to recover, Indi Hartwell caught his eyes. Lumis and Hartwell stared into each other's eyes too long, and Knight took advantage, planting The Tortured Artist with a reverse DDT out of the ropes to win.

Lumis and Hartwell almost kissed, but The Way dragged her away before the two could lock lips. Backstage, McKenzie Mitchell tried to interview Indi Wrestling, but The Way interrupted. Bronson Reed challenged Johnny Gargano. Instead, Austin Theory agreed to fight The Colossal next week.

    Result

    Knight def. Lumis by pinfall.

    Grade

    B-

    Analysis

This match came together well beyond the ending. The pacing was engaging as both men approached a victory. However, the pace ground to a halt with the arrival of Hartwell. It was never explained what happened after The Tortured Artist carried her to the back.

That angle had potential that was thrown out for a potential future payoff. Regardless, it would have been nice to not take three minutes on Lumis and Hartwell staring at each other in this match.

Franky Monet Interrupts Io Shirai's Interview

3 OF 8

Leon Ruff made clear that he would hurt Isaiah "Swerve" Scott again soon, ready to end this on his own terms.

Beth Phoenix interviewed Io Shirai one on one, asking her about her loss to Raquel Gonzalez and the next step in her journey. She admitted that she was tired and fell to her latest challenge, but she promised to rest up and get back the NXT Women's Championship.

Franky Monet interrupted and nearly got into a fight with The Genius of the Sky by telling Shirai she would take her spot while she was away.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Shirai is a fantastic wrestler, but she is a much better promo when she is allowed to speak Japanese. This interview with Phoenix served its purpose but could have been better. It ultimately set up the eventual rematch between Shirai and Gonzalez when the time is right.

Monet vs. Shirai could be a great match in the meantime. La Guera Loca is a talent with plenty of pedigree that needs to be established in NXT. Even if she does not defeat The Genius of the Sky, pushing Shirai to her limit would be a great first step.

Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Breezango

4 OF 8

Breezango came out in gear reminscent of the Great Britain queen's guard. This angered Grizzled Young Veterans, who saw this as Fandango and Tyler Breeze not taking them seriously.

Using a few key tactics to isolate Fandango, Zack Gibson and James Drake looked dominant early. However, Prince Pretty took full advantage of a hot tag, taking out the Grizzled Young Veterans on the outside.

Breeze could not keep up though with GYV's speed and ingenuity. Drake nearly stacked him up for three then Gibson tagged in and hit the Ticket to Mayhem to win.

    Result

    GYV def. Breezango by pinfall.

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

NXT's tag team division always delivers despite a limited focus. Grizzled Young Veterans in particular bring so much to every match. The story of every match is different, even if most all end in the Ticket to Mayhem.

Playing up the best issues between these teams, this was about the heels taking advantage of small mistakes by the faces. While Breezango may have more tenure in WWE, GYV certainly looked like the veterans throughout.

While MSK vs. GYV has been done, there's still at least one more title match left in this rivalry.

Sarray vs. Zoey Stark

5 OF 8

William Regal welcomed Sarray in the parking lot where Zoey Stark got involved to ask to be the first opponent for The Warrior of the Sun.

Stark showed respect to Sarray early, but she found herself at a disadvantage on the mat against The Warrior of the Sky. The relative NXT newcomer used her power against her hyped opponent, who would not stay down for long.

A series of knees brought down Stark, allowing Sarray to begin building back momentum. Stark connected on a suplex into a running knee for a nearfall, but a roundhouse into a forearm and Saito suplex sealed the victory for The Warrior of the Sun.

Stark and Sarray stood in respect for one another, but Toni Storm stomped out Stark when she left the ring.

    Result

    Sarray def. Stark by pinfall.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

As always, Stark delivers. While she has looked better against a couple other opponents, she definitely made Sarray look dangerous. The Warrior of the Sun is a huge signing for NXT. She could easily follow in the footsteps of Io Shirai, Kairi Sane and Asuka in taking over the black-and-gold brand.

Based on the attack of Storm post-match, it seems likely the next stage of this story is a tag team feud. Storm and Mercedes Martinez have a problem with Stark, and Sarray is set up as an ally for Stark. These teams colliding can add credibility to NXT's women's tag team division.

The winners could also be perfectly set up to challenge Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart down the line.

NXT Cruiserweight Championship: Kushida (c) vs. Oney Lorcan

6 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

After showing a video package celebrating the victory of Kushida, the new NXT cruiserweight champion walked out and established his own open challenge. Oney Lorcan answered the call, but he was not ready for the new speed of Kushida brought on by his change of footwear.

He repeatedly dragged his challenger to the mat, focusing on the arm of Lorcan. A running knee by the challenger dazed the champion, but all it took was one punch to answer back. The champion hit a springboard double knee drop to the arm of the challenger then went for the Hoverboard Lock.

Lorcan could only escape for so long before he was thrown to the mat and forced to tap out.

Afterward, Legado del Fantasma ambushed the NXT cruiserweight champion. MSK arrived to even the odds, and the faces stood tall in the ring.

    Result

Kushida def. Lorcan by submission to retain the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

    Grade

    A-

    Analysis

If we are getting open challenges from Kushida almost every week, NXT is going to easily to must-watch for a long time to come. The NXT cruiserweight champion is a unique technician that brings everything to every performance.

Lorcan looked good against Kushida, pushing him to compete at a high level. With Danny Burch out for a while, the heel should be allowed to compete on his own in matches like this. He is a physical competitor that can make everyone look better.

Kushida vs. Esobar is a money match as is Kushida vs. Jordan Devlin, but it does not end there. Leon Ruff, Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, Jake Atlas and more can get the rub competing with the new champion.

Imperium vs. Ever-Rise

7 OF 8

Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai made clear that the NXT women's champion would defeat any and all challengers. Mercedes Martinez answered in her own promo, telling Gonzalez she would take out Kai first before going after the champion.

Ever-Rise tried to challenge Imperium's speed early, but nothing could stop the dominant display for Marcel Bartel and Fabian Aichner. Killian Dain and Drake Maverick tried to distract the heels, yet Imperium took the win easily with an elevated diving spinning uppercut for the win.

    Result

    Imperium def. Ever-Rise by pinfall.

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

Imperium can have a fantastic sprint with just about anyone, but this was not even long enough for that. It was a complete squash with very limited time. That makes sense given the relative status of Imperium and Ever-Rise on the card.

However, it would have at least been more interesting if Maverick and Dain made some impact by trying to get involved. The odd-ball tag team has heat with Aichner and Bartel. That should explode in a serious tag team match soon.

Kyle O'Reilly vs. Cameron Grimes

8 OF 8

Cameron Grimes tried to forget the unfortunate opening to the show, but his special NFT was taken from him due to a late bid by Ted DiBiase. Karrion Kross caught Kyle O'Reilly at the ramp, staring him down as the potential title challenger headed to the ring.

While The Technical Savage looked uncertain early about fighting KOR, he took over after a vicious German suplex clearly made an impact on O'Reilly's injured neck. Grimes tried to take advantage with a crossface, but KOR showed he was the far more natural technical competitor, nearly locking in a heel hook.

The damage built up on KOR, who was clearly far from 100 percent. O'Reilly barely blocked the Cave-In and hit a roundhouse, and the kick counters continued. Finally, KOR won with a diving knee drop to the back.

    Result

    KOR def. Grimes by pinfall.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

While O'Reilly is certainly a top star in NXT and Grimes is a talented wrestler, this never felt like the main event of the night. It would have made more sense for Sarray vs. Zoey Stark or Kushida vs. Oney Lorcan to end the night instead.

The Technical Savage brought his absolute best to this match, and it was a fun contest to watch. The series of kicks between the two landed hard. It was simply impossible to believe that Grimes had any chance at all

WWE Raw Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 19

Sana Ejaz Khan

WWE dealt with all of the fallout from WrestleMania 37 last week, so this week's show was all about building up WrestleMania Backlash on May 16. Why they added WrestleMania to the Backlash name is still a mystery.

After attacking Asuka and Rhea Ripley last week following her return to the red brand, Charlotte found herself in a one-on-one contest with The Empress on Monday.

Drew McIntyre earned a WWE title shot last week, but MVP orchestrated an attack by T-Bar and Mace to soften him up. This week, The Scottish Warrior was looking for answers.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of WWE Raw.

The Viking Raiders vs. Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin

1 OF 7

Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander faced Erik and Ivar in a rematch from their encounter on last week's show. Benjamin and Erik started for their teams.

Surprisingly, Benjamin overpowered the biking and brought in Alexander for a double-team. The former members of The Hurt Business maintained control with quick tags to keep themselves fresh. Erik uncorked a huge right hand so he could tag in Ivar.

The big man missed a splash and allowed Alexander and Benjamin to regain the upper hand almost immediately.

A few moments later, The Viking Raiders were able to turn things around and get the win with The Viking Experience.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

While it's great to see Alexander and Benjamin being portrayed as competent wrestlers, it makes no sense why they controlled so much of the action.

Erik and Ivar just returned last week. If WWE wants to rebuild them, they should be destroying tag teams with little to no effort. They don't have to squash every team they face. They just need to look like the powerhouses they are.

The match was decent but ended up being on the short side. Erik and Ivar only got in a little bit of offense toward the end. The match they had last week had a similar issue but it wasn't as glaring because they had more time.

Randy Orton vs. Riddle

2 OF 7

During a backstage interview, Randy Orton was interrupted by Riddle. He immediately went to Adam Pearce and demanded a match despite having no idea who Riddle was.

The Viper took control but when he went for a suplex, Riddle countered into a sleeper. Orton pulled him off his back by his hair. Riddle went right back to the same hold, so Orton backed him into the corner. Riddle went for it a third time.

The Legend Killer dropped onto his back to break the hold, but Riddle grabbed him a fourth time. He forced Orton to roll out of the ring. He caught Riddle's kick from the apron and tripped him before dropping him onto the announce table.

We came back from a commercial to see Orton stomping on Riddle's feet repeatedly. The Bro fired back with some strikes before The Viper planted him with a powerslam for a two-count. He followed up with a vertical suplex and a thumb to the eye when Riddle tried to mount a comeback.

The former MMA fighter unloaded with a series of punches and forearms, but one Irish whip into the corner from Orton put him back down. The Legend Killer hit the ring post when Riddle avoided a shoulder in the corner, allowing the former U.S. champion to get in some offense.

The Bro was able to avoid the RKO and rolled Orton up for the upset win.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

Orton singlehandedly made the backstage segments with Riddle funny. His reaction to the scooter and pretending to not know who Riddle was when he requested the match were legitimately hilarious.

The match they had ended up being highly entertaining. The Viper controlled most of the action but when Riddle had the upper hand, he made the most of it.

The Viper has reached the point in his career where he can do more good getting other people over. He might be the one person who can make a feud with Riddle entertaining for everyone, even the people who dislike The Bro.

They had good chemistry both in the ring and as opposite personalities backstage. If this feud continues, it should only get better from here.

Lana and Naomi vs. Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax

3 OF 7

Naomi started off this tag team match against Nia Jax. She hit a few kicks before tagging in Lana. Jax overpowered both women when they went for a double Irish whip, but the neon warriors managed to keep her under control with quick tags and a few double-team moves.

They went for a suplex and Jax ended up suplexing both of them instead. Baszler tagged in and leveled Lana for a two-count. Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke came out and played a few embarrassing clips of Jax as a distraction.

Jax angrily ignored a tag from Baszler and went after Rose and Brooke, leaving her partner high and dry. Naomi got the tag and hit a double facebuster with Lana for the win.

    Grade: D+

    Analysis

The first minute of this match was actually some solid tag team wrestling. It went downhill from there due to the distraction by Rose and Brooke.

Shenanigans are fine, but they have to make sense. Jax is a champion. She shouldn't be suckered into doing something that stupid so easily.

Also, what did Rose and Brooke gain by helping another team get a win. If anything, this would allow Naomi and Lana to request a title match before them.

The women's tag team division is booked with almost no effort behind it, which is a shame because there are some talented Superstars who aren't being used to their full potential.

Elias vs. Kofi Kingston

4 OF 7

Elias and Jaxson Ryker were back for another performance, but they were once again interrupted by The New Day. This time, Xavier Woods was playing bass instead of a trombone.

Elias hit Kofi Kingston with a running knee as soon as the bell rang for a quick two-count. He stayed on the former WWE champion and grounded him with strikes.

Woods distracted him with some bass notes so Kingston could take control. Elias dropped him across the top rope to stop him in his tracks. Kingston recovered and hit a flying crossbody for a near-fall.

They screwed up the SOS but eventually hit it for a close two-count. Elias countered a hurricanrana and hit a flying elbow drop for the clean win.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

Most of this short match was decent, but they started to fall apart toward the end. The SOS botch and a few other moments stood out as sloppy.

It looks like Ryker and Elias will continue to feud with The New Day for the time being. What's strange is WWE seems to have two non-title feuds going in the Raw tag team division while Omos and AJ Styles have been unused since winning the Raw tag titles at WrestleMania.

Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman vs. Mace and T-Bar

5 OF 7

Drew McIntyre came to the ring as soon as the show started to call out MVP for orchestrating an attack against him last week with T-Bar and Mace. It didn't take long for MVP to come out for a response.

He said McIntyre is just mad that Bobby Lashley put him out at WrestleMania and told him to expect the unexpected. MVP said Mace and T-Bar are not associated with The Hurt Business after him but McIntyre did not believe him.

The Scottish Warrior approached MVP but before he reached him, Mace and T-Bar attacked him again. They hit a double chokeslam as MVP looked on. They walked right past him on the ramp as they headed to the back. After a break, McIntyre asked Pearce to book a fight against Mace and T-Bar.

The handicap match got started at the top of the third hour. McIntyre went right after T-Bar and brought him to a neutral corner to beat him down. T-Bar made the tag and Mace nailed a huge uppercut for a two-count.

The former Retribution members started to dominate the former WWE champion. McIntyre hit a spinebuster for a two-count as he started to rally. Mace and T-Bar double-teamed him until the ref called for the bell. That is when Braun Strowman's music hit and he came out to make the save.

After a break, we returned to see this turned into a tag team match. McIntyre smiled as The Monster Among Men destroyed Mace. Eventually, Mace and T-Bar took the big man down.

McIntyre tagged in and ripped Mace's mask off. He used it as a weapon against Mace and got himself disqualified. Strowman ripped off T-Bar's mask before they left.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

The opening segment of the show was a good exchange between MVP and McIntyre, but the match that it spawned was mediocre at best.

The best part of this was seeing T-Bar and Mace look like an actual threat to McIntyre. They are both bigger than he is, so it would have been ridiculous if he dominated them like he would most other opponents.

Why is Strowman helping McIntyre? They were just in a match last week as opponents. They have never shown any signs of being friends, so this felt extremely random.

Ending both matches in disqualifications was a bad choice but it will be more acceptable if Mace and T-Bar keep the masks off and go back to their old names.

The Miz vs. Damian Priest

6 OF 7

The Miz was out next with Maryse for an episode of Miz TV. John Morrison was nowhere to be seen as he started talking about making Bad Bunny a household name. He even took credit for Bunny's tour selling out. They also bragged about their reality show's ratings.

They flirted with each other and kissed as firework went off in the Thunderdome. The Miz plugged an upcoming WWE documentary about him and tried to propose a toast to himself, but he was interrupted by Damian Priest.

The Archer of Infamy made a joke about The Miz being about as real of a fighter as Jake Paul before he mocked him for losing his pants last week. Maryse ended up accepting a challenge on her husband's behalf.

Priest started off strong and immediately put The A-Lister on defense. A distraction from Maryse allowed The Miz to throw him into the barricade. He nailed Priest with a double ax handle from the top rope and a series of punches.

Priest blocked the It Kicks with an elbow strike and hit a senton from the middle rope. After kicking out of a dirty pin, Priest hit his finisher for the win.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

On one of the weaker shows in recent memory, this ended up being one of the strongest segments of the night. That says a lot about the state of Raw right now.

This match was fine for what it was. Priest picked up the clean win even with Maryse there to provide some distractions. Morrison's absence went unexplained.

Priest needs to move on from this quickly. He should be chasing the U.S. title, not keeping up his feud from WrestleMania.

Asuka vs. Charlotte

7 OF 7

Charlotte gave a promo during the first hour where she called the women backstage "Rats who don't actually like each other." Asuka and Rhea Ripley came out but nothing much happened from there.

The Queen and The Empress finally met in the main event of the evening. They locked up and came to a stalemate a few times before Asuka finally took control with some kicks to the body. Charlotte avoided a hip strike and nailed her with a boot to the face.

Both women went down hard after a neckbreaker on the apron. It was hard to tell who was supposed to come out on top in that one. We returned from a break moments before Asuka began to build some momentum. She hit a nice German suplex and a running kick for a close two-count.

Charlotte avoided the Asukalock and applied the Figure Eight. Ripley caused her to break the hold while the ref was checking on Asuka, and that allowed The Empress to roll Charlotte up for the win. The Queen attacked the official after the match and beat him down. Even two other refs couldn't make her stop until she wanted to.

    Grade: B

    Analysis

Like her father, Charlotte was born to be a heel. She is so much better at it than she is at being a babyface, and she is much more valuable as an obstacle for another face to overcome because The Queen will never be an underdog.

These two have great chemistry as opponents, but there were a few moments when it looked like they were trying to rush, leading to a couple of minor mistakes. For the most part, they looked good.

Seeing Rhea Ripley circle the ring like a shark eyeing her prey gave this bout an extra level of unpredictability. You can never tell if she is going to attack or just keep watching these two beat each other up.

On any other night, the way this match ended would have been fine, but this week featured too many disqualifications and instances of interference. This was a weak show with only a few highlights worth taking the time to watch if you did not tune in live.
