WWE Raw Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 26

Monday's episode of WWE Raw was the halfway point between WrestleMania 37 and WrestleMania Backlash, so this is usually when management starts filling up the card for the upcoming pay-per-view.

After not appearing last week, Bobby Lashley returned to the red brand to address the WWE Universe and the man who will challenge him for the WWE Championship in three weeks, Drew McIntyre.

Speaking of McIntyre, he teamed up with Braun Strowman for a rematch against Mace and T-Bar after last week's bout saw the former Retribution members unmasked.

WWE acted like it was a huge surprise to find out who was under the masks, but anyone with a memory better than that of a goldfish knew it was Dio Maddin and Dominik Dijakovic the whole time.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on Monday's show.

T-Bar and Mace vs. Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre

1 OF 7

Instead of starting the show with a longwinded promo segment like it usually does, WWE jumped right to the action this week with Mace and T-Bar taking on McIntyre and Strowman. The former members of Retribution kept the masks off but introduced face paint to their look.

When The Monster Among Men came out, he said this would be a handicap match instead of a tag bout so he could prove that he could do what McIntyre failed to do last week.

The Monster Among Men started off against T-Bar and began easily dominating his opponent. Mace came in with a burst of offense to turn things in his favor. The ref ended up disqualifying Mace and T-Bar when they refused to stop double-teaming Strowman. This brought out The Scottish Warrior to make the save.

We returned from a break to see the tag team match we were originally promised taking place. Poor timing led to McIntyre taking Strowman down with a clothesline. This led to Mace and T-Bar winning by count-out. After it was over, Strowman powerslammed McIntyre and yelled at him for not listening.

    Grade: C-

    Analysis

Ditching the masks was the best thing Mace and T-Bar could have done. Now, they just need to get their original ring names back, and they should be set.

From a storytelling standpoint, this was almost the same thing we saw last week. No new ground was trodden, and nobody gained anything from the disqualification and count-out finishes.

What helped was the physical exchange these Superstars had between the moments of bad booking. This match was four powerhouses beating each other up, so it had some enjoyable moments. This was not a good segment, but that is on the people booking everything, not the wrestlers.

The New Day and Damian Priest vs. Miz, Jaxson Ryker and Elias

2 OF 7

The Miz, John Morrison, Elias and Jaxson Ryker were in the ring for another episode of Miz TV. The A-Lister bragged about his WWE Network documentary and his reality show. Once again, The Miz and Morrison took credit for Bad Bunny selling out his tour.

They tried to perform a song, but Damian Priest quickly interrupted them. The New Day joined him in throwing tomatoes at the quartet as the show went to a break.

We returned right as the bell rang for this six-man tag match. The heels almost immediately cornered Xavier Woods to gain the upper hand. He eventually managed to tag Kofi Kingston and turn the tide in his team's favor.

Having Morrison at ringside gave the heels a slight advantage at times. Whenever the good guys had control for too long, somebody from the other team would interfere to stall their momentum.

After everyone got involved, Woods was able to get the pin on Ryker with an inside cradle.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

We all knew the feud with The Miz and Priest was going to continue, but this seems to confirm the feud with The New Day against Ryker and Elias will also move forward.

Raw's tag team division is thin right now, so it's a little surprising to see a non-title storyline when we haven't even seen AJ Styles and Omos since WrestleMania. We also have The Viking Raiders possibly continuing a feud with Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin, so it's possible WWE is covering for one of the Raw tag champs being injured or sick.

The wrestling itself was fine if a little forgettable. WWE's six-man matches usually follow a few formulas, and this was definitely one of those times. Ultimately, this win will mean nothing, but at least the match had a few decent sequences.

Another Non-Match Between Sheamus and Humberto Carrillo

3 OF 7

Sheamus was out to issue another open challenge this week, but he said his U.S. title would not be on the line. Last Monday, he destroyed Humberto Carrillo for trying to accept the challenge and laughed about it during the replay. Carrillo came out for a second shot at The Celtic Warrior.

Sheamus took a cheap shot at him and beat him down mercilessly. Carrillo recovered and jumped on the champion before backdropping him out of the ring. He hit three dropkicks and a huge suicide dive to send him over the announce table.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

It's great to see Carrillo back in the mix and already in the hunt for the U.S. title, but seeing as how Sheamus just won the belt, it doesn't seem likely this will end with a title change.

This segment didn't do much to move the storyline forward, but it did help Carrillo rebound a bit after being demolished last week. It might be 50-50 booking, but at least it makes sense in this situation.

Next week will probably be when they have their first official match. If Carrillo wins, he will almost certainly earn himself a title shot at Backlash.

RKBro vs. Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin

4 OF 7

Randy Orton had a backstage segment with Riddle and admitted he underestimated him last week. He offered to team up with The Bro this week to battle Alexander and Benjamin.

Riddle started off with Alexander and almost locked in the Bromission right away. Alexander was able to counter and tag in Benjamin to take over. They kept Riddle grounded for a long time with quick tags and focused offense on his legs.

The former MMA fighter drilled Alexander with a knee to the face so he could tag The Viper. After an initial salvo, Orton lined up for the RKO. He ended up hitting an RKO to Alexander as he flew off the top rope. Riddle begged for the tag, so Orton obliged and spiked Benjamin with a DDT.

Riddle followed up with the Floating Bro to score the pin. He went in for a hug, but Orton backed him off and left him to celebrate by himself.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

Riddle can be annoying with his gimmick, but the exchange he had with Orton backstage was just the right amount of dumb to be funny. The Viper's deadpan delivery is what really sold it.

The match that followed was surprisingly straightforward. Orton did not turn on Riddle, and this wasn't an excuse to get revenge. He actually seemed to want to make this work even if he finds The Bro annoying.

As usual, Alexander and Benjamin looked great. This was a solid match and one of the better things Riddle has been involved with in quite some time.

Asuka, Lana and Naomi vs. Nia Jax, Shayna Baszler and Rhea Ripley

5 OF 7

Asuka and Shayna Baszler started for their teams. Asuka grabbed Baszler by the arm and tried to make her tag out to Rhea Ripley, but it temporarily backfired on her.

Ripley ended up tagging in, and Asuka managed to get the upper hand. As soon as Lana took a turn in the ring, the Raw women's champion regained her composure and started dishing out punishment.

Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke came out to watch from ringside, so Baszler tried to run them off. They threw a bucket of water on her. When Nia Jax tried to help her partner, she ended up slipping in the water a few times.

We returned from a break to see Lana make the hot tag to Asuka. The Empress knocked Ripley off the apron with a running hip strike before going after the legal woman, Baszler. Jax ended up getting the win with a big leg drop.

    Grade: C-

    Analysis

The booking of everything we saw with Rose and Brooke was beyond moronic. Jax falling in some water was not nearly as funny as WWE wanted it to be.

However, the six women in the match actually put on a decent show when they weren't trying to make this into a cartoon. Ripley and Asuka looked especially aggressive at times.

Also, the sudden turn of Ripley into a heel since WrestleMania seems ill-advised. The WWE Universe likes her, and it's unlikely a live crowd would boo her right now.

Charlotte Flair vs. Mandy Rose

6 OF 7

Sonya Deville brought Charlotte Flair and the official she attacked last week to the ring. Deville reminded The Queen that she was suspended and fined, but she also said Adam Pearce rushed his decision and gave her the floor to give an apology.

Charlotte started by apologizing to management and the fans before she got to the ref, Eddie Orengo. She specifically apologized for attacking him, and he accepted. He admitted that if had he seen Rhea Ripley interfere, she would have won the match.

Deville said Charlotte's suspension had been lifted and announced her return to the ring tonight. The Queen stopped her and demanded an apology from Orengo. He said he was sorry, and she gave a glib smile before telling him to hold the ropes for her as she left. Pearce saw them backstage and expressed his anger that Deville would do this behind his back.

Later in the show, Deville booked her former bestie, Mandy Rose, to face The Queen. Shockingly, The Golden Goddess was able to get in a lot of offense early in the match. A close call with the official almost cost Charlotte.

The Queen was able to get the win, but she was still irate at the ref for almost costing her the victory.

    Grade: B-

    Analysis

Deville has been showing signs of wanting to make a play for Pearce's job for weeks, and it is finally starting to be a bigger part of the ongoing story. This could lead to some interesting moments in the coming weeks.

The segment with Charlotte and the ref was good. It let her be the pompous heel she has become and allowed Deville to show a few of her true intentions.

Rose has consistently been improving in the ring ever since she got to the main roster. Being able to hang with Charlotte in this bout move-for-move shows how far she has come.

This bout wasn't too long, but it did enough to tell the story it needed to tell.

Drew McIntyre vs. Braun Strowman

7 OF 7

The main event of the night saw Strowman and McIntyre meet for a singles match. Strowman worked out a deal with Pearce to earn a spot in the Backlash WWE title bout if he won this match.

After a few minutes of back-and-forth action, Lashley came out to watch the match for himself. We returned from a break to see Strowman send McIntyre into the corner with a huge Irish whip. No, we won't call it a Scottish whip just because McIntyre is from Scotland. We're saving that for a PPV.

The Scottish Warrior blocked a clubbing blow and hit the Glasgow Kiss to get a comeback going. MVP and Lashley got involved at one point, but they were knocked off the apron.

Mace and T-Bar tried to interfere and were able to distract McIntyre long enough for Strowman to hit a powerslam for the win.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

If you like matches where two big dudes beat the life out of each other, this is for you. McIntyre and Strowman know how to work snug and always make their fights look great.

This was easily the best match of the night because it was simple and effective. The way it was booked at the end fell apart a little, but the majority of what we saw was solid.

Adding Strowman to the WWE title match at Backlash was predictable but necessary. If The All Mighty is going to retain, he will probably pin Strowman to protect McIntyre for a future encounter.

This wasn't a great episode, but it was definitely better than the last two weeks. That might be a low bar to clear, but at least it's something

With Cesaro refocused on Seth Rollins, who will step up to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship next?

It is the question the April 23 episode of SmackDown sought to answer.

Would The Head of the Table find a new contender worthy of his time and energy or would he wait again? And what of Cesaro and Rollins, whose rivalry escalated a week ago with The Architect's sneak attack on The Swiss Superman? What did their latest chapter include?

Throw in a title defense by new Intercontinental champion Apollo Crews and Friday's show promised to be an eventful one on the road to WrestleMania Backlash.

What went down, who emerged with momentum on their side and what did it mean for the top stars on the blue brand?

    Find out with this recap.

Who Will Step Up to Challenge Roman Reigns?

2 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Cesaro kicked off this week’s show but before he could address the WWE Universe, “Burn It Down!” exploded over the PA system and Seth Rollins interrupted.

The egotistical heel took credit for Cesaro realizing his potential at WrestleMania, saying he was responsible for giving The Swiss Superman the greatest night of his life. He then blamed God and Mother Nature on his loss at WrestleMania, saying he would not lose to Cesaro on his best day.

The babyface laid down the challenge for a rematch but Jey Uso interrupted, still infuriated that Cesaro thought he was worthy of a title shot against Roman Reigns. The heels worked together, surrounding the ring for an attack before Daniel Bryan returned and stood by his fellow Ring of Honor alumnus’ side.

Bryan said he came to the ring to ensure Cesaro gets what he deserves because he is the hardest worker in the room. “He hasn’t gotten one break in his career for the Universal Championship.” Bryan ran down everything that was going to happen, complete with Roman Reigns coming to the ring and joining Rollins and Uso in a three-on-two beatdown of Bryan and Cesaro.

Reigns did appear but instead bragged about his WrestleMania victory before calling Bryan and Cesaro losers and exiting the arena.

    Analysis

    What is this, Raw?!

WWE spent 15 minutes setting up a tag team match it very easily could have announced from the very beginning. Instead, those involved sleep-walked through a promo that accomplished nothing, furthered no storylines, and came no closer to determining the No. 1 contender to Reigns’ title than it was at the beginning of the show.

A rare misfire from a brand that is typically fire on the mic, particularly on the part of Reigns, who was just good on this evening.

Cesaro and Daniel Bryan vs. Seth Rollins and Jey Uso

3 OF 7

    Credit: WWE

The predictable tag team match kicked off with Seth Rollins and Jey Uso getting the best of Cesaro and working them over in their corner. The Swiss Superman created separation and tagged Daniel Bryan into the match, the former world champion exploding into the match and unloading a series of Yes Kicks to the opposition.

Heading into the commercial break, though, the heels regained control of the match with a buckle bomb from Rollins to Bryan. The gutsy Bryan fought his way back into the match, only for Uso to cut him off with a big Samoan drop.

Bryan finally made the tag and The Swiss Cyborg exploded into the match, delivering right hands and uppercuts to Uso. He executed a picture-perfect springboard uppercut before Bryan wiped out Rollins on the floor with a tope suicida.

Cesaro delivered another uppercut and scaled the ropes, only to come off the top and directly into a superkick from Uso.

Back from another commercial with Cesaro going for the swing and Rollins countering into a rollup. Cesaro escaped and applied the Sharpshooter, only for Uso to break it up with a superkick to the back of the head. An angered Rollins walked out on his partner, nursing a back injury and leaving Uso to withstand a big uppercut from Cesaro and the running knee from Bryan as the babyfaces earned the hard-fought victory.

After the match, Bryan called Reigns out while Cesaro delivered the swing to Uso. When Reigns didn’t come out, Bryan had Cesaro swing Uso again, this time taunting The Head of the Table by insinuating that he wouldn’t save Jey the way his cousin had repeatedly saved him in every championship match.

Bryan ended by saying Reigns is afraid because he knows a match with Cesaro ends with a new champion. The babyfaces stood tall to close the segment.

    Result

Bryan and Cesaro defeated Rollins and Uso

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

There are far worse ways to spend the first 40 minutes of SmackDown than by prominently featuring four of the best workers on the brand.

This was a fun, physical tag team match that highlighted Cesaro while showcasing both Rollins and Reigns as cowardly and selfish heels who use and abuse even their closest associates for their own benefit. Bryan was great as Cesaro’s hype man after the match and the sheer number of swings by The Swiss Superman to Uso was incredible.

While the opening promo segment of the night was rather mundane, this was a hell of a lot of fun and really highlighted how immensely talented the top of the card is on Friday nights. Above all else, Cesaro continued to look like a legitimate star, which is the point of everything involving him at this point.

Tamina (with Natalya) vs. Nia Jax (with Shayna Baszler and Reginald)

4 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

The budding rivalry between Tamina and Nia Jax intensified this week as the second-generation competitor battled The Irresistible Force in singles action, respective partners Natalya and Shayna Baszler watching from the floor.

Jax talked trash and Tamina answered by taking her opponent down with a Thesz press. She looked for the bodyslam but Baszler interfered, stopping the move. Undeterred, Tamina rocked Jax with a big boot, then sent her into the barricade.

Back in the ring, failed interference from Baszler and the returning Reginald led to a distraction that allowed Tamina to score the win off a rollup.

    Result

    Tamina defeated Jax

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

Trying to find the good in a match or segment is easier said than done sometimes and this is one such case.

From the unnecessary drama between Baszler and the not-missed Reginald at ringside to the sloppy, disjointed action between bells, this was bad. The rushed nature, due to the lack of time, only served to drag things down further.

It would behoove WWE to book Natalya and Tamina’s tag title rematch sooner than later because the longer this feud goes, the more exposed it will be as simply not that interesting.

And please, for the love of all things good professional rasslin, eliminate Reginald from the equation. WWE Creative’s reliance on shoehorning him into the women’s division has done nothing but harm to the programs he has appeared in, even if it is through little fault of the performer himself.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Kevin Owens vs. Apollo Crews

5 OF 7

    Credit: WWE

Earlier in the broadcast, Adam Pearce informed new Intercontinental champion Apollo Crews that he would make his first title defense tonight against...Kevin Owens. Later, Big E took exception to Owens jumping the line and while the new top contender confirmed the match should probably belong to the former champion, it doesn’t. Instead, KO would defeat Crews and win the title.

Owens outclassed Crews early in their match but a timely distraction by the massive Commander Azeez allowed the champion to turn the tide in his favor. Crews crashed and burned on the floor, though, allowing Owens to flatten him with a swanton bomb.

Sami Zayn’s music played, breaking up the pin and taking Owens’ focus away from the titleholder entering the break.

Crews hung Owens up on the top rope and added a big clothesline for a near-fall. The champion continued to dominate the action while Zayn sat in on commentary, repeatedly claiming the title is rightfully his. Owens fought back, delivering a cannonball that earned him a count of two.

Owens and Crews traded reversals before the challenger dropped his opponent with a pop-up powerbomb for two. Owens dropped the champion on the ring apron but a distraction by Azeez allowed Crews to score the rollup for the win.

After the bell, the massive commander dropped Owens with the Nigerian Nail, leaving KO lying after a cheap stunner to the victorious champion.

    Result

    Crews defeated Owens

    Grade

    B-

    Analysis

    Another match, another distraction-leads-to-rollup finish.

It’s lazy booking, to be honest, and not something this match needed. There were enough moving pieces, with Zayn at ringside and the added element of Big E taking exception to Owens receiving the title shot that WWE Creative could have booked a finish that protected all involved without reverting to the same tired-ass finish we saw literally one match earlier.

It completely and utterly dragged down a match that was both fun and showcased untapped potential between Owens and Crews. Do not be surprised if WWE officials go back to that match later down the road.

Aleister Black Returns, Bayley Insults Bianca Belair

6 OF 7

    Credit: WWE

Michael Cole threw to a new vignette from the returning Aleister Black, who read from a book entitled “The Dark Father.” He chastised the viewers as the enigmatic promo came to a close.

Elsewhere, Big E and Crews brawled backstage until referees broke them up.

Kayla Braxton caught up with the SmackDown tag team champions Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode. The Street Profits interrupted and a tense staredown ensued until Bayley broke it up. The newly-announced No. 1 contender talked trash on Bianca Belair.

The EST of WWE, and new SmackDown women’s champion, confronted Bayley backstage. The heel threw fake compliments at the champion before laughing them off and walking away.

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

It is about damn time that Aleister Black is back on WWE TV!

The seriously underutilized Black commanded the viewers’ attention in his vignette, sending an ominous message to the WWE Universe and creating genuine intrigue as to where this latest chapter will take him. “The Tales of the Dark Father” book could potentially be a nod to a new persona and if so, there are few better choices than “The Dark Father” for the uber talented Dutchman.

Rarely does a talent have an opportunity to rewrite the course of their career. Black does and one can only hope those in management fully recognize his potential and allow him to realize it.

Kudos to WWE Creative for stringing together a few backstage segments/video vignettes to tell stories without necessarily overexposing the talent in actual matches. It is a formula that works in other promotions and something the company should consider using across the board moving forward.

The Mysterios vs. Alpha Academy

7 OF 7

    Credit: WWE

The rivalry between The Mysterios and Alpha Academy continued Friday, with the heels looking to extend their winning streak in duos action against the father and son tandem.

They found success early and often as Chad Gable and Otis wore down Dominik Mysterio, cutting him off from his corner and overwhelming him with their power and technical wrestling advantage. The rookie competitor fought back, created separation and tagged Rey into the match.

The arrival of the future Hall of Famer sparked a comeback for the babyfaces. Dominik stunned Gable with a sliding sunset flip powerbomb that drove the former Olympian into the guardrail. With Otis subdued at ringside after Dominik rammed him into the commentary table, Rey scaled the ropes and delivered a splash to Gable for the win.

    Result

    The Mysterios defeated Alpha Academy

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

This was a really solid, high-energy tag team match between two teams that have feuded for what feels like forever, but have quietly developed strong in-ring chemistry over that time.

There will be those that argue the team of Gable and Otis needed the win to continue to build credibility with the WWE Universe and while there is validity to that argument, the argument can be made that Rey and Dominik needed the win to retain their own legitimacy after months of doing everything in their power to put the new team over.

Either way, it still feels like The Street Profits are the next in line to challenge for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, begging the question: what is the endgame with these two teams? Has this all been to keep them busy? To give them something to do?
