WWE Raw Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from Legends Night

Monday brought with it the first WWE Raw of 2021, a jam-packed show that featured a world title defense and a parade of legends who previously held said title.

With appearances from Hogan and Flair, among others, the show promised a few strolls down memory lane.

The question, though, was whether the stars of today could steal the show out from underneath icons of yesterday.

Find out the answer to that and more with this recap of the January 4 episode.

Match Card

1 OF 10

    Announced ahead of Monday's show:

    • WWE Championship match: Drew McIntyre vs. Keith Lee
    • What's next for Alexa Bliss and Randy Orton?

'Miz TV' with The New Day

2 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

A ridiculously unfunny vignette featuring Hulk Hogan kicked off the show. Ugh.

Miz and John Morrison followed with the latest edition of "Miz TV," running down the card for the night and some of the legends who would make special appearances throughout the broadcast before welcoming their first guests of 2021: The New Day.

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods took over the show, renaming it "New Day Talks," with the arrogant heels as their first guests.

The segment dragged on until Miz's anger boiled over and Mr. Money in the Bank erupted. Teddy Long cut him off, though. "Miz and Morrison...you're going to take on The Undertaker!" Kingston and Woods playfully ran around the ring, selling the announcement, before Long corrected himself and booked the predictable tag team match instead.

    Analysis

Last week's show ended with Randy Orton threatening to light Alexa Bliss on fire in a, for better or worse, effective cliffhanger.

How did this week's show start? Not with the resolution of said cliffhanger but, instead, Hulk Hogan in a horrifically bad vignette and a promo segment that gave way to a tag team match.

    This frickin' company.

Kingston and Woods tried, but there was no making up for bad creative and a predictable outcome, the likes of which you'd expect out of the fourth segment on a forgettable 2017 episode of SmackDown.

This is going to be a long night.

The New Day vs. Miz and Morrison

3 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

Back-and-forth action dominated the opening moments of The New Day's battle with Miz and Morrison that kicked off the in-ring portion of Monday's show. Every time the heels threatened to take control, the babyfaces frustrated them.

Kingston sailed over the ropes and wiped Miz and Morrison out heading into another break.

The heels finally grounded Kingston coming out of the commercial and cut him off from Woods. Kingston fought back and made the tag to his trumpet-playing teammate. Woods exploded into the match and drove Miz to the floor, survived a big forearm from Morrison and answered with one of his own.

Woods fired off a shining wizard and scored the pinfall on Morrison. Miz appeared despondent following yet another loss.

    Result

New Day defeated Miz and Morrison

    Analysis

The work was solid, the effort was there, but it is difficult to get invested or care about a match like this between guys who have been on a booking treadmill of sorts for the last year. They have worked each other countless times, neither team ascending or descending. They're merely there, and that is one of the most frustrating aspects of WWE television.

No one ever really benefits. They're just on TV, wrestling the same matches against the same guys because Vinnie Mac doesn't know how to elevate talent through his so-called creative genius.

So the result is a solid wrestling match, between guys who know each other well and are really too talented to be stuck in this same spot, 365 days later.

Such is life in the E, though.

AJ Styles vs. Elias

4 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

Angel Garza attempted to wow legends Alicia Fox and Mickie James, to little avail, before the focus turned to the squared circle and AJ Styles' latest showdown with Elias.

A desperate Elias attacked from the opening bell, surviving an early headlock to seize control of The Phenomenal One. The sinister songster of WWE dominated coming out of the commercial as Omos watched from the floor, towering over the proceedings like a New York skyscraper.

Elias delivered a sit-out chokeslam, scoring a near-fall. He caught Styles mid-flight, blocking the Phenomenal Forearm with a jumping knee for yet another two-count.

Styles countered an electric chair with a hurricanrana. Moments later, he delivered the Styles Clash and scored the win.

After the match, Jaxson Ryker botched a guitar shot as badly as his tweet game, smashing it into the waiting boot of Omos before bailing to the floor and escaping with Elias.

    Result

    Styles defeated Elias

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

Add this to the list of matches we never have to see again.

First, Styles is inexplicably a babyface after spending well over a year as one of the company's top heels. On top of that, he has a massive heel bodyguard who Vinnie Mac obviously sees dollar signs in but knows cannot possibly hold up his end in the mat game. Nothing about that screams "good guy."

Add to it a feud with Elias that came from out of nowhere and has done nothing for anyone, except earning Ryker television time that no one asked for, and you have an entire segment that left fans scratching their heads rather than being excited for anything involving any of these guys as Royal Rumble approaches.

But hey, at least AJ declared for the pay-per-view's namesake match, as if his involvement was ever really in question.

Charlotte Flair and Asuka vs. Peyton Royce and Lacey Evans

5 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

Women's Tag Team champions Charlotte Flair and Asuka returned to action this week, battling the team of Peyton Royce and Lacey Evans in nontitle action as the legendary “Nature Boy" Ric Flair watched his daughter from ringside.

Some early, improving chemistry from Royce and Evans was on full display as they worked over Flair. A tag to Asuka looked to have the champs rolling, but Royce opportunistically shoved The Empress off the ropes while Flair and Evans brawled on the floor.

The heels dominated coming out of the break, stomping Asuka in the corner, thus keeping her on the opposite side of the ring from her partner.

Flair finally tagged in and unleashed a flurry of chops to the chest of Evans. She launched Royce with a suplex and delivered a moonsault to both opponents. Asuka tagged herself in and scored a big kick to the face of Royce.

An ugly Natural Selection from Flair to Royce earned two as Evans broke up the pin just in time. Again, The Sassy Southern Belle came on to The Nature Boy, earning the wrath of his daughter.

Late, Ric (inadvertently?) tripped up Charlotte, allowing Royce to score the win with a crucifix roll-up.

After the match, Charlotte belittled her father, sending him away as she fumed over her loss.

    Result

Royce and Evans defeated Flair and Asuka

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This was a solid little match with no real build or reason for occurring, but it did provide Evans and Royce rare wins, so that was a nice change of pace.

What was not, though, was Charlotte's belittling and berating of her father. Ric is one of the most beloved wrestlers in the history of the business and the biggest babyface in any room he enters. Why, if we are supposed to accept The Queen as a babyface, would WWE Creative even book that finish and everything that followed it?

For someone this company so desperately wants us to get behind in Charlotte, it sure does book her to be this wholly unlikable character at times. Chalk this up to one of those times.

Riddle vs. Bobby Lashley

6 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

The typically fun-loving Riddle wasted little time taking the fight to United States champion Bobby Lashley in their match, striking with rapidity. Lashley weathered the storm and dealt the fight back to Riddle heading into the break.

Lashley dominated coming out of the timeout, rocking Riddle and leaving him with a dazed and confused look on his face. Riddle fought back, delivered a straight kick to the face and followed with a Bro-ton for two. A Final Flash knee to the face earned another count of two.

Lashley recovered, stunned Riddle on the top rope and brought him down with the Dominator. He followed with the Hurt Lock, but Riddle springboarded off the ropes. He tapped out, forcing Lashley to break the hold. The referee did not see it, ordered the match to continue and Riddle scored the roll-up win.

    Result

    Riddle defeated Lashley

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

Does Riddle really need such a weak-ass finish to beat Lashley? The booking behind the former mixed martial artist on Raw has been so...interesting, to say the least. He is legit between the ropes, with the sort of personality that will win him casual fans, but WWE has yet to allow him to build much in the way of credibility.

His win over Lashley should set him up for a United States Championship match. Whether he is the chosen one to unseat The All Mighty remains to be seen, but this win would seem to suggest those in management are at least comfortable enough to hint at such a booking decision.

Dana Brooke vs. Shayna Baszler

7 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

Mandy Rose made her way to the ring for a match with Shayna Baszler after The Queen of Spades left both her and tag team partner Dana Brooke lying a week ago.

Baszler attacked Rose from out of nowhere, though, leaving the match in doubt.

Brooke hit the ring and demanded a match with Baszler. A brief scuffle gave way to Baszler trapping Brooke in the clutch. Dana countered into a roll-up for the stunning win.

After the match, Rose broke up the clutch that Baszler never released and joined her partner in a double flapjack to the heel.

    Result

    Brooke defeated Baszler

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

Was this a make-good for last week's horrific booking? Did someone with sway point out how damning Baszler demolishing Brooke and Rose all by herself might be to the tag team's credibility and get Vince McMahon to book this to make it up?

That would make more sense than any of this storyline has to this point.

If you would have suggested a year ago that Baszler would lose to Dana Brooke less than a year after dominating NXT as its most badass champion of all time, I would have totally believed you because Vince McMahon seems to hate anything that comes from the black-and-yellow brand.

On a positive note, Dana Brooke has busted her ass to get an opportunity to star on Raw or SmackDown and absolutely earned a win of this caliber. Good for her.

Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton

8 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

After a convoluted explanation for not burning Alexa Bliss alive that he attributed to self-hatred and turning it against his enemies or something like that, Randy Orton stalked toward the ring for a scheduled matchup against Jeff Hardy.

The Viper attacked Hardy early and often, methodically picking him apart while commentator Tom Phillips discussed the rich history between them. Hardy fought back with an intended Twist of Fate that more closely resembled a swinging neckbreaker.

Regardless of what it actually was, it was for naught. Orton regained control as The Charismatic Enigma crashed on the arena floor.

Back from the break, a sadistic Orton targeted the earlobe of Hardy, twisting it and contorting it in a call back to their Hell in a Cell match from 2018. Hardy finally mounted a comeback, rocking his opponent with a corner clothesline. He followed with Whisper in the Wind for a near-fall.

Hardy looked poised to put Orton away with the Swanton Bomb, but Orton rolled out of the way and then dropped the consummate babyface with the draping DDT.

Hardy tried for a Twist of Fate, but Orton caught him with an RKO for the win.

    Result

    Orton defeated Hardy

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

The Twist of Fate into the RKO is always a great finish and one these two have worked to perfection numerous times over the years.

The chemistry is still there, though Hardy is a step or three slower than he used to be. He is still a great, sympathetic babyface you want to see overcome Orton's relentless onslaught to score the win.

He didn't here, though, as the yearlong push for one of the best heels in the industry continued.

Love or hate some of the creative choices WWE is making with him, including on this very show, one cannot deny how superb he has been over the last 365 days. One of the greats, relishing his return to the main event.

The Lucha House Party vs. The Hurt Business

9 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

Moments after a brief encounter with former Divas champion Melina, Lucha House Party's Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado hit the ring for a showdown with Raw tag team champions Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander of The Hurt Business. MVP watched from the commentary table.

The heels established dominance, but overconfidence led to Dorado rocking Alexander with a jawbreaker. A big knee from Benjamin stopped him from making a tag before tension and dissension between the Raw tag champions proved costly.

After a superkick to Benjamin, Dorado scored a win with a crucifix roll-up.

Following the match, an infuriated MVP berated his teammates, demanding Benjamin and Alexander settle their differences and get on the same page. An irate Alexander walked off while MVP held Benjamin back.

    Result

Lucha House Party defeated The Hurt Business

    Grade

    B-

    Analysis

MVP finally addressed the mounting issues within his own team, calling Benjamin and Alexander out for their inability to set personal differences aside. Alexander has been extraordinarily cocky, expressing the confidence that he lacked earlier in his WWE run. He's done so at the expense of Benjamin, though, and we saw it really boil over for the first time here as Alexander tried to do too much, leading to the distraction that allowed Metalik to score the win.

It was a nice bit of booking, even if the match itself was mostly forgettable.

More importantly, it makes the viewer want to see what will happen next between the reigning Raw tag team champions, a rarity when it comes to the red brand creatively.

WWE Championship Match: Drew McIntyre vs. Keith Lee

10 OF 10

    Credit: WWE.com

The legends on hand for the night's proceedings watched from the stage as Keith Lee made his way to the ring for his WWE Championship opportunity against Drew McIntyre, adding credibility and a sense of significance to this television main event.

The determined McIntyre worked over Lee early, but as the fight spilled to the floor, the challenger leveled the champion with a pounce that sent him over the guardrail and onto the arena floor.

Lee worked over the ribs and midsection coming out of the break, prepared to exploit that injury in the name of winning the WWE Championship. McIntyre fought back, launching Lee across the ring. Lee answered with a spinebuster. The champion delivered a powerbomb from the ring apron, driving Lee through the announce table ahead of the final break of the night.

The Limitless One fought through the effects of the table and scored a near-fall following the break. McIntyre looked for a backslide, but Lee powered out. McIntyre countered and delivered a Future Shock DDT for two.

Lee slowed his opponent's momentum, again targeting the ribs. The competitors scaled the ropes, from which Lee delivered a super Spanish Fly that looked hella dangerous but netted the challenger a two-count.

Lee countered a Claymore and tried for the Spirit Bomb. McIntyre escaped and delivered the Claymore for the successful title defense.

Goldberg made his way to the ring after the match and challenged McIntyre to a match at Royal Rumble, to which the champion suggested such a match would be like him wrestling his dad. The show abruptly left the air before anything could happen, a victim of time.

    Result

    McIntyre defeated Lee

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

This was a hell of a championship match between two hugely talented heavyweights.

McIntyre sold the hell out of his ribs and core, really putting over Lee's work in that area of his body. Conversely, Lee was presented as a total badass and looked like he belonged in the ring with the top star on the brand.

The Goldberg stuff was...as expected this time of the year. WWE leans on its legends, books them into the ground until you could not possibly want to see them ever lace a pair of boots again. Everything that made Goldberg the legendary icon he was has been stripped away by overexposure.

McIntyre saying wrestling him would be akin to wrestling his father is apropos and really highlights the sentiments of fans watching the show.

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction, Highlights from January 1

Happy new year, and welcome to coverage of the first WWE SmackDown of 2021.

WWE was looking to start the year on the right foot after a difficult 2020 as it prepares for the annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view on January 31.

Roman Reigns has picked up a couple of wins over Kevin Owens in both a TLC and a cage match. This week, The Tribal Chief made a request to management in relation to KO.

We also saw Big E battle Baron Corbin in a non-title bout just one week after he defeated Sami Zayn to win the Intercontinental Championship.

Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair teamed up to face Bayley and Carmella after both teams lost to Asuka and Charlotte last week.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.

Opening Segment

1 OF 6

After WWE paid tribute to Jon Huber with a graphic and recapped last week's Steel Cage match, Reigns made his way to the ring with Paul Heyman and Jey Uso.

The universal champion talked about how his gold glove is a reference to how everything he touches turns to greatness. He says Heyman was discarded and he saved him. He said Uso has had the best year of his career because of what he learned from The Tribal Chief.

Owens came out and Reigns yelled at him that he had his chance and failed. KO said despite everything Reigns has tried to do to him, he is still standing. He told Reigns he should be embarrassed because he had to use Uso to win.

Owens said he is going to request a match with Jey to give him some payback before leaving.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

Reigns has been at the top of his game for a long time and this promo was another example of how far he has come since turning heel.

As always, KO gave a strong showing on the mic, too. These guys work well with each other because their images are so different. Reigns is the poster boy while KO is the working man's hero. It's a great combination.

This was a decent way to kick off the first show but an actual match might have been a better choice.

Big E vs. Baron Corbin Turns into a Tag Team Match

2 OF 6

Big E's first match after winning the IC title was also the first match of 2020. King Corbin served as his opponent while Sami Zayn worked with the commentary team.

The two powerhouses locked up and traded some takedowns to get things going. After a couple of minutes, Corbin took control and grounded his opponent.

Wesley Blake and Brandon Cutler watched as their boss dominated the action. The King countered Big E's apron spear but he ended up running right into The Big Ending.

Zayn, Cutler and Blake attacked E to cause a disqualification. The big man fought hard but Apollo Crews ended up making the save and taking out everybody. After the break, this turned into Crews and E vs. Zayn and Corbin.

The hot tag led to Big E throwing Corbin around the ring with a trio of belly to belly suplexes followed by a running splash. After a close call with a Helluva Kick, Corbin and his knights abandoned Zayn. Crews hit him with a powerbomb for the win.

    Grade: B

    Analysis

This was a fun pair of matches even if it would have been more satisfying to get one long bout over the two segments. However, anything that gets Crews on TV is acceptable.

Zayn is one of the absolute best heels in WWE right now. Every little thing he does is perfect for his character and he elevates everyone around him.

It was a little surprising to see Crews get the pin instead of Big E but if it leads to some kind of push, it makes sense.

The Riott Squad vs. Tamina and Natalya

3 OF 6

Billie Kay accompanied Natalya and Tamina to the ring for their match against Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott. Kay tried to yell encouraging words but Tamina told her to keep quiet.

After the opening salvo from Nattie and Morgan, Tamina took control of Riott and put her in the corner. The green-haired grappler rolled out and tagged her partner for a flurry of strikes.

The Riott Squad worked together to take Tamina down with a double Russian leg sweep. For some reason, Kay decided to switch sides and root for Riott and Morgan.

Thanks to a distraction from Kay, Morgan was able to pin Tamina. Kay celebrated like she did something special but The Riott Squad acted like they wanted nothing to do with her.

    Grade: C+

    Analysis

This was a fast-paced match that could have been a lot better had they been given five more minutes. Morgan looked especially good with some of her strikes to Tamina.

The weird stuff with Kay was funny but made no sense. Does she want to beat The Riott Squad or join it? We don't know yet. Should we care?

Riott and Morgan continuing to rack up wins needs to lead to a shot at the tag titles soon. They have the momentum. They just need the final push.

Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair vs. Bayley and Carmella

4 OF 6

Belair and Carmella kicked off the action. The EST forced Mella to the mat and began working over her arm. Bayley got the tag and ran into a dropkick from Belair.

Banks and Belair worked together at ringside to take out both opponents with some double-team offense. We returned from a break to see Bayley and Mella controlling the pace.

The Boss desperately reached for a tag as The EST struggled to break free from Bayley's grasp. She hit a beautiful vertical suplex but Carmella tagged in and prevented her from making the tag.

Banks finally came in and went wild on Carmella. Corey Graves made a Mandalorian joke as he watched the real love of his life take a beating from the SmackDown women's champion.

Belair took out Bayley at ringside while The Boss was able to lock in the Bank Statement on Mella. Reginald pulled her out of the ring and Banks made him pay. This allowed Mella to hit her finisher to get the pin.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

This was a really good match that everybody should take the time to watch. All four women performed like they were working a big PPV.

Mella getting the pin will set her up for a rematch with Banks for the title down the line, but the real shining star in this bout was Belair.

The EST always looks so crisp with every movement. She hits a textbook suplex that makes it obvious how many people do not know how to do it properly by comparison.

Bayley and Banks are two of the best in WWE and put those skills on display. One of the best things about The Role Model is her ability to bring others up to her level and we saw that in this bout.

Daniel Bryan and Otis vs. Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura

5 OF 6

Daniel Bryan and Otis teamed up to take on Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. Cesaro took control early and brought Bryan to the corner to Nakamura could tag in.

We returned from the break to see Cesaro and Nakamura still dominating The Yes Man. The Swiss Superman got a two-count with a slingshot elbow.

Bryan was able to reach Otis and The Dozer started running over Cesaro. Chad Gable encouraged him as he threw Cesaro around and hit the Caterpillar.

Bryan came back in with a sunset flip from the top rope for a two-count. Nakamura hit a kick to the face before almost getting him in an armbar. Otis broke it up but got taken out in the process. Bryan put Nakamura in the Yes Lock for the win.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

Again, WWE delivered a solid tag team match. This was the fourth in a row on this show but each one felt different in their own way.

The team of Otis and Gable could either be great or a joke. It depends on how WWE books them moving forward. The pre-match video showing Otis and Bryan working on hip technique was not a great sign.

Cesaro and Nakamura remain two of the best and most underutilized stars on the roster. Let's hope they have more success in 2021.

Kevin Owens vs. Jey Uso

6 OF 6

As soon as the bell rang, Owens tackled Uso and began unloading on him with rights and lefts. He stomped Uce into the mat and slammed his head against the top turnbuckle.

No matter what Uso tried to do, Owens maintained the upper hand. He told Uso none of this was his fault and he should blame Reigns as he continued to beat him down.

We came back from a commercial to see Uso prevent Owens from hitting a superplex. KO avoided the splash and hit a Stunner for the win. This happened about 30 seconds after we returned.

Owens did not stop there. He continued to beat up Uce as he tried to draw Reigns out. He cuffed Uso to the top rope and kept punishing him while The Tribal Chief remained backstage.

He put Uso on some crates near the stage and climbed part of the set. He was about to leap onto him when Reigns appeared out of nowhere to attack him. Uso recovered and helped his cousin beat KO down with chairs.

The beatdown lasted several minutes and ended with Owen being tossed through a table from about 10 feet up. The show came to a close with Reigns standing tall over his fallen foe.

    Grade: B

    Analysis

The match with Uso and the beatdown that followed made Owens look like a badass but it wasn't much of an actual wrestling contest. It was still highly enjoyable.

Uso is so good at selling and Owens is incredible at the verbal aspect of the game. Together, they kept everybody's eyes on them until Reigns showed up to bat cleanup.

The table spot at the end looked great. This feud has been awesome and it's not surprising WWE wants them to keep it going. They will likely have a rematch at The Royal Rumble.

Overall, this was a good show. WWE booked some solid matches and advanced some storylines. Deville's first promo after her return is going to be interesting.

WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from December 30

Sana Ejaz Khan

It is that time of year again. For the final show of 2020, WWE NXT presented the NXT Year-End Awards. This was the time to celebrate the greatest competitors for the black-and-gold brand over the year of 2020.

Nine categories were to be named on this show including Overall Competitor of the Year, Match of the Year and Breakout Star of the Year. Some of the NXT greats had an impressive year, and it was time to recognize stars like Adam Cole, Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, Io Shirai, Rhea Ripley and more.

Pete Dunne still had a score to settle with Rodrick Strong The long-time rivals were set for another huge technical showdown in the continued clash of Undisputed Era against The Kings of NXT.

Johnny Gargano looked to exorcise his biggest demon in his title career by fighting and hopefully defeating Leon Ruff. The Rebel Heart has lost repeatedly as champion. The Curse had yet to be broken, but he had a chance to prove he is a true legendary NXT North American champion with a win.

Two likely future top stars on the black-and-gold brand, Bronson Reed and Isaiah "Swerve" Scott were set to open the show. Mercedes Martinez was also announced to return to the ring.

This show was massively booked from the Year-End Awards to the variety of big matches promised. This looked to be a fantastic show to close out the year.

The NXT Year-End Award Results

1 OF 8

These were the winners of this year's WWE NXT Year-End Awards:

    • Event of the Year: NXT TakeOver: WarGames.

"The Colossal" Bronson Reed vs. Isaiah "Swerve" Scott

2 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

To open the show, WWE showed a tribute picture for a former NXT star, the late Luke Harper.

Isaiah "Swerve" Scott walked into this match far too confident, fighting a man nearly twice his size. While he managed to injure Bronson Reed's knee, The Colossal refused to lose in his return to action.

He fought through the pain and blasted Swerve with a standing senton followed by The Avalanche to pick up another impressive victory.

    Result

    Reed def. Swerve by pinfall.

    Grade

    C-

    Analysis

While both Reed and Swerve are immensely talented, this never truly worked. The dynamic was awkward as Reed sold too much for Swerve despite their massive size difference. Scott needed to do more to sell that he could truly injure and potentially defeat The Colossal.

The short run-time for the match coupled with a lack of drama and psychology felt off for NXT's typical quality. This may have been a last-minute addition to the show because there is no doubt these two can work a fantastic match with time to prepare.

The Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Breezango

3 OF 8

It was announced early in this match that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic would return next week, and commentary reminded fans that The Grizzled Young Veterans almost won the tournament last year.

Fandango kept the pressure off Tyler Breeze after Zack Gibson and James Drake isolated Prince Pretty early, but the electric dancer injured his knee on an impressive dive into The Grizzled Young Veterans. Gibson saw a target and went after that knee of Fandango.

Breeze saved his partner, trying to fight back two-on-one. Prince Pretty caught Drake with an enzuigiri, but Gibson knocked Fandango off the apron to leave Breeze alone. The two heels hit the Ticket to Mayhem to win. Afterward, Ever-Rise taunted Grizzle Young Veterans but ultimately backed off.

After winning NXT Tag Team of the Year, Undisputed Era announced Adam Cole and Roderick Strong would represent the group in the Dusty Classic.

    Analysis

This was a fun tag team between two of the best in NXT today. Breezango played the underdog faces well throughout, even if the booking never allowed them to work together for long. This was a classic heel domination over a team that refused to quit.

The Dusty Rhodes Classic is always a fun tournament, one of the highlights of NXT. Grizzled Young Veterans have been set up as the favorites, even with Undisputed Era involved. That said, favorites in the Dusty Classic rarely win.

Mercedes Martinez vs. Valentina Feroz

Xia Li and Boa completed their torturous training, and the mystery woman led them into the light. NXT promised the group would arrived in NXT at New Year's Evil.

Mercedes Martinez barely gave Valentina Feroz room to breathe in this physical squash. The veteran dominated her opponent and hit the Air Raid Crash for the three. Afterward, she called out every woman in NXT.

    Analysis

This was a straightforward re-introduction for Martinez. She has been gone long enough that a squash match had some merit. She was able to show her physical and technical style in dissecting her opponent.

That said, the squashes should not last long. She took out Io Shirai last week, and that should be the next goal for the dangerous wrestler. She is a veteran who deserves opportunities to treated like the best in the business finally.

Roderick Strong vs. Pete Dunne

Pete Dunne's joint manipulation of Roderick Strong was too much for The Messiah of the Backbreaker early, but few have the resilience and endurance of the Undisputed Era stalwart. Strong fought back until The Bruiserweight blasted him into the steel barricade.

The two men went back and forth as The Messiah of the Backbreaker pulled out his signature move in a few key situations while Dunne gladly punished Strong for the smallest mistakes. The Bruiserweight broke the fingers of Strong with a vicious catch, followed by an emphatic Bitter End for the win.

    Analysis

This technical showcase was everything one would expect of two of the best wrestlers in NXT. Strong got a chance to show that he is still a fantastic singles wrestler, even if he has transitioned to tag team wrestling primarily.

In the end, this was about building up Dunne. The Bruiserweight is clearly on the precipice of title contention, and a match with Finn Balor would remind the world how great he is. This was a great start as Dunne pulled out the classics in this battle of smart technicians.

Finn Balor and Kyle O'Reilly Set the Stage/Damian Priest Attacks Karrion Kross

6 OF 8

After winning NXT Match of the Year for his battle with Kyle O'Reilly, he took his rival's trophy and headed to the ring. Pete Dunne caught him on the ramp, promising he was coming after the NXT Championship next.

The Prince invited O'Reilly to the ring to take his NXT Year-End trophy. While the Undisputed Era rival was glad to accept it, he wanted something greater. Both men promised to hurt the other until one remained standing with the NXT Championship.

Scarlett and Karrion Kross interrupted to tell the winner that he would see Doomsday soon. Damian Priest started his fight Kross early as the men brawled over the entire arena. The two crashed through a table as Scarlett laughed at the carnage.

    Analysis

O'Reilly and Balor have insane chemistry when wrestling, but they are both limited on the mic. The segment was supposed be a fiery clash of top stars. Instead, the two came off as midcard competitors next to the brutal fight around the ring.

Kross and Priest did not need words to sell their rivalry. It was impressive how easily the two took over the moment to the point that it was easy to forget the NXT champion was just in the ring. NXT New Year's Evil may be main evented by Balor and O'Reilly, but Kross and Priest have more presence behind them.

Lucha House Party vs. Legado Del Fantasma

7 OF 8

Rhea Ripley talked about her friendship with Raquel Gonzalez. She had opened up her heart to someone she considered a close friend, and her friend had turned on her. Gonzalez mocked The Nightmare, saying she had planned this all from the start to take advantage of Ripley.

Santos Escobar mocked the cruiserweight division and the "sham" of the NXT Year-End Awards. He made clear he was not looking for praise or popularity, just domination. Lucha House Party arrived in a surprise appearance from Monday Night Raw and challenged Legado del Fantasma.

William Regal made the match official, and Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik immediately went after Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde. The luchadors ran over the heels, pushing the pace even before the bell.

Legado del Fantasma struggled to keep up. Dorado hit Mendoza with a reverse hurricanrana into a springboard elbow for the win.

It was announced by Dexter Lumis that Escobar would fight Metalik next week at New Year's Evil.

    Analysis

This was the best Metalik and Dorado have looked in months. From the opening bell, they looked spry and energized. While Lucha House Party remain members of the red brand, this proved the luchadors should move to NXT full time until Raw decides to actually use them.

Metalik is an ideal opponent for Escobar. An experienced performance with a wealth of in-ring talent, the luchador can bring out a new side of the NXT cruiserweight champion. Until Curt Stallion is ready to return, this is a perfect idea by WWE, using underutilized talent.

NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano vs. Leon Ruff

8 OF 8

Johnny Gargano found a black cat backstage and freaked out, sure someone was mocking him. After Austin Theory won Future Star of the Year, The Rebel Heart accidentally broke a mirror with Theory's protein powder then ran under a ladder.

Even with The Way on the outside, Ruff dominated early while Gargano was clearly off his game. However, the NXT North American champion managed to trip his challenger off the apron then throw him into the barricade repeatedly to turn the tide.

Early confusion turned to overconfidence as Gargano beat down and mocked Ruff. The underdog battled through with an enzuigiri into a hanging neckbreaker and German suplex before a cannonball. This was only enough for a nearfall though.

The NXT North American champion refused to get caught by anything more, battling through and connected on a powerbomb. He locked in the Gargano Escape, but Ruff made it to the ropes.

The challenger planted the champion with a flatliner outside then a huge frog splash for a close nearfall that worried The Way. However, he ducked Ruff in the corner, bashing him face-first into the top turnbuckle then hit the One Final Beat for three.

    Result

Gargano def. Ruff by pinfall to retain the NXT North American Championship.

    Analysis

While the build was mostly comedic, the in-ring action was worth of an NXT main event. Both men brought their all. Even with a few sloppy counters, Ruff had his best singles performance to date on the black-and-gold brand thanks to the giving work of Gargano throughout.

In the end, it was the right time to end the Curse. The joke was fun for a moment, but The Rebel Heart deserves a big title reign. He proved he can make a star of anyone, and he has plenty more challengers on the horizon.
