WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction, Highlights from March 19

Two nights before WWE Fastlane, the blue brand hit the Fox airwaves with a high-stakes main event pitting Edge against Jey Uso.

With the opportunity to be the special guest enforcer in Sunday's pay-per-view main event between Daniel Bryan and Universal champion Roman Reigns, would Edge make his in-ring return to SmackDown for the first time in 10 years a successful one or did Uso spoil the comeback?

Find out the answer to that and more with this recap of a special go-home edition of SmackDown.

Match Card

1 OF 9

    Already announced for Friday's show:

    • Winner is the Fastlane Special Enforcer: Edge vs. Jey Uso
    • SmackDown Women's Championship Match: Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax
    • Michael Cole interviews intercontinental champion Big E and Apollo Crews
    • Seth Rollins will appear (and bring "LOTS of DRIP!")

    Coverage begins at 7:00 p.m.

SmackDown Women's ChampionshipSmackDown Women’s C Match: Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax

2 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

SmackDown women’s champion Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair kicked off the broadcast with a backstage argument that ended with The EST adamant that she would not come to The Boss’ aid tonight. From there, Banks made her way to the ring for a title defense against one-half of the women’s tag team champions, Nia Jax.

Jax’s partner Shayna Baszler accompanied her to the squared circle for the match.

The uber aggressive Banks attacked front he opening bell, wiping Baszler out and stomping Jax into the corner. A double knee attack, followed by a bulldog, followed before The Boss tried for a Bank Statement. Jax fought back and delivered a gorilla press slam for two.

Jax added a second slam and an elbow drop for another near-fall. She executed a perfect Samoan Drop but, again, could only keep the champion down for two. Belair’s music played and the 2021 Royal Rumble winner made her way to the ringside, checking on Banks heading into the break, despite her backstage warning moments earlier.

Back from the commercial, Jax targeted the left leg of her opponent, applying a stretch muffler before swinging Banks into the corner. She reapplied the submission but Banks escaped and delivered a reverse Meteora.

As the action broke down, Baszler entered the ring and inadvertently struck her own tag team partner, allowing Banks to score the jackknife rollup for the win.

    Banks defeated Jax

    Analysis

This preview of Sunday’s women’s tag team title match, in which Jax and Baszler will defend against Banks and Belair, was a welcome change to the tired formula. There was no long, bloated in-ring promo used to set up the night’s main event. Instead, we had a brief backstage back-and-forth that directly transitioned into a high-profile title match.

That match was a solid one that forced Banks to fight from underneath and an alert Belair, knowing full well she has greater odds of leaving WrestleMania 37 with the women’s title if she faces The Boss instead of The Irresistible Force, appearing to support her.

Corey Graves calling out Baszler for possibly intentionally kicking Jax was an interesting development.

Jax fought for the title her and if she had won, it almost certainly would have taken up her focus, leaving her tag title reign with Baszler to suffer. Did The Queen of Spades purposely cost Jax to benefit herself? That is certainly one interpretation.

What is for certain is Sunday night, the two teams battling for the tag titles have their own tension to overcome if they wish to leave the event with the gold. As a result, an otherwise pedestrian match features considerable drama for the creative team and performers to draw from.

Seth Rollins Addresses Cesaro, Edge Talks Main Event and More

3 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

Edge joined Kayla Braxton for a backstage promo in which he talked about Jey Uso’s potential to be a star if he can manage to break out of Roman Reigns’ shadow. He also reminded the audience of Daniel Bryan’s running knee to the face from last week, but admitted he would have done the same thing.

Elsewhere, Shayna Baszler vowed to dish out the beating of Bianca Belair’s life, presumably later tonight.

In the ring, Seth Rollins hit the ring in another ludicrous suit for another promo. He claimed Cesaro disrespected, humiliated, and embarrassed him when he walked out on The Vision a few weeks back. He touted his WrestleMania main events while Cesaro has, in his words, been “an abject failure.”

He played video from last week of him beating down Cesaro and mocked his attempts to seize the brass ring before Shinsuke Nakmaura interrupted the proceedings.

The Artist told Rollins to shut up and when mocked, blasted the former WWE champion with Kinshasa and left him lying to close out the segment.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Rollins fired off the typical reasons for attacking a fan favorite before Nakamura defended his former tag team partner Cesaro, leaving the heel lying and presumably setting up a match with Rollins in the very near future.

From a booking perspective, it makes sense that Nakamura would defend someone he has been so close with over the last year. Plus, it keeps Rollins busy without overexposing a potential match with Cesaro before WrestleMania.

Will it benefit Nakamura in any measurable way besides television time? Probably not, but there are far worse ways to get to Rollins-Cesaro.

Edge foreshadowing some payback for Bryan by bringing up his running knee was a nice a touch, as was his effort to put Uso over as a genuine star in the industry.

As for Belair vs. Baszler, it is a match we just saw not that long ago. Adding it to tonight’s card feels like an attempt to kill time and a potentially overbooking of a program that was nicely highlighted to start the show.

The Mysterios vs. The Street Profits; Mysterios vs. Alpha Academy

4 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

SmackDown tag team champions Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode watched from the commentary position as The Street Profits battled Rey and Dominik Mysterio in a babyface vs. babyface match.

A fast-paced match saw Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford control the majority of the action and appear poised to pick up the win. An alert Rey pulled Ford off the top rope and Dominik rolled up Dawkins for the upset win.

After the match, Chad Gable and Otis appeared and took exception with the idea that the Mysterios were suddenly in tag team title contention, potentially over them.

The babyfaces cleared the heels out of the ring heading into the break.

Back from the timeout, the Mysterios battled Alpha Academy in the latest entry in their budding rivalry.

Rey caught Gable with a 619 but soon saw his momentum halted as Otis overpowered him and tossed him around the ring with a punishing bodyslam. He trapped the future Hall of Famer in a bearhug, looking to squeeze the breath out of his smaller opponent.

Rey bit his way out of the submission but again fell prey to a slam. The veteran competitor tagged Dominik into the match, sparking a babyface comeback. The rookie competitor’s roll came to an end when Gable caught him in another 619 attempt and delivered a rolling German suplex.

Otis added a big splash to earn the win.

After the match, the team engaged in a staredown as Michael Cole touted the red-hot division.

    Result

The Mysterios defeated The Street Profits; Alpha Academy defeated The Mysterios

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

The SmackDown tag team division is significantly ahead of its Raw counterpart, with four teams really establishing themselves as credible championship threats.

The match between The Street Profits and Mysterios was all-energy, a babyface-heavy match that gave Rey and Dominik a much-needed win, only to have the uber aggressive Gable and Otis ruin their celebration and beat them immediately after.

Meanwhile, the champs sat back and talked trash on commentary, hyping themselves up despite a noticeable lack of title defenses since capturing the gold.

This will all come to a head, presumably at Fastlane or in a multi-time match at WrestleMania, but all signs point Ziggler and Roode having to pay the proverbial piper in the form of a massive title defense against their top contenders.

Daniel Bryan Addresses Fastlane, Edge and Roman Reigns

5 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

Daniel Bryan kept the tension between him and Edge alive moments into his in-ring promo, shining a light on their issues before WWE universal champion Roman Reigns entered the ThunderDome, Paul Heyman by his side.

Reigns took exception to Bryan claiming to tap him out Sunday at Fastlane. “Paul, he’s got a better chance of shooting lightning out of his ass than tapping me out.” The Tribal Chief said he would rather lose his arm than tap out or, better yet, die in the ring than tap out to someone like Bryan.

Bryan said that might be a bit much, but he will beat Reigns Sunday at Fastlane for the universal title, whether he taps him out or not.

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Reigns was great here, really hammering home the alternatives he would rather endure than tap out to Bryan on pay-per-view. It also sets up an in-ring story in which Reigns becomes so intensely focused on evading submissions that he opens himself up to Bryan’s vast knowledge of holds, counter-holds, and pin-falls.

Bryan was his typically fine self on the microphone and his early mentions of Edge continued to hint at a potential showdown or angle between them by night’s end.

King Corbin vs. Sami Zayn

6 OF 9

    Credit: WWE

In the “Least Anticipated Match in SmackDown History,” Sami Zayn battled King Corbin in singles competition. Kevin Owens, fresh off a backstage promo in which he attempted to talk sense into longtime best friend Zayn, watched from the commentary position.

A ferocious Corbin attacked early and often, overwhelming the former intercontinental champion with his power advantage. Corbin missed a bling charge into the corner and Zayn rolled him up, holding onto the ropes for added leverage, but could not earn the win.

Zayn would nearly collide with the official, allowing Corbin to deliver End of Days for the win.

After the match, the conspiracy-minded heel implored Owens to back up his claims of fraud and lies. When Owens didn’t, he caught him with a sickening Helluva Kick that left his former best friend lying and Zayn a ranting mess.

    Result

    Corbin defeated Zayn

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

If we had to sit through that entirely meaningless match between Zayn and Corbin to get to Zayn vs. Owens on the WrestleMania stage, so be it.

Anyone familiar with Owens and Zayn’s work as opponents should be absolutely thrilled over the idea of them clashing on the grand stage. Even if it is in an undercard match, they have the opportunity to bring their careers full circle, graduating from high school auditoriums to the biggest show of the year, in the same venue that hosted the Super Bowl.

The setup was excellent, with Owens trying to talk some sense into his friend, only to drive him fully over the edge. It was a great start to a program that should only intensify in the weeks to come.

Michael Cole Interviews Big E and Apollo Crews

7 OF 9

    Credit: WWE

During a sit-down interview moderated by Michael Cole, intercontinental champion Big E addressed top challenger Apollo Crews for the first time since the latest sneak attack just a week ago.

Big E suggested Crews take time to enjoy the crispness of the March air and his functioning limbs because he will experience neither after Sunday.

Crews cut a promo with his Nigerian accent, further infuriating Big E and causing the IC champion to find a golf cart and meet the No. 1 contender backstage. They brawled, Big E blasting Crews with a trash can, before officials split them up.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

Big E had that seething anger, the sort that precedes tears of rage, as he addressed Crews here. He was great, expressing frustration in a way that everyone can understand and relate to. Speeding around the ThunderDome, confronting Crews and not letting the sneak-attacking heel wait until Fastlane was exactly what you would expect from a fighter who knows the target of his emotions is in the same building.

Big E whooped ass and the referees pulled him away from his foe to keep some air of mystery for Sunday.

What will be interesting to see is if Crews can exploit those emotions to his advantage, using them against the champion and catching him for the win. It is a story we have seen before and one that would allow the program to continue into WrestleMania, if nothing else.

Natalya and Tamina Attack Shayna Baszler and Bianca Belair

8 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

Unlike earlier in the night when she provided support for Sasha Banks, Bianca Belair would be left to go it alone against Shayna Baszler in singles competition.

Frustrated with her own partner, Nia Jax left Baszler on her own.

The EST and Queen of Spades barely had any time to do battle as Natalya and Tamina hit the ring and attacked, making their case for a Women’s Tag Team Championship opportunity. They left Baszler and Belair lying, standing tall and sending a message to the women’s locker room.

    Result

    No contest

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Banks and Jax leaving their respective partners high and dry was a nice touch and only adds to the dissension that currently exists within the two teams. Then, just as those teams struggle to remain cohesive, the united tandem of Natalya and Tamina attack and enter their names in tag team title contention.

Why this could not possibly have been accomplished in the opening segment remains to be seen, but this accomplished what it set out to and added to the list of challengers for the tag champions.

Not unlike we saw earlier in the show with the men’s division.

Edge vs. Jey Uso

9 OF 9

    Credit: WWE.com

In the high-stakes main event of this week’s show, the right to be the special enforcer for this Sunday’s Universal Championship Match between Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan up for grabs, Edge found out just how arduous the road to WrestleMania is.

The Rated R Superstar found himself on the receiving end of a targeted attack by Uso, who worked over the ribs of the Hall of Famer. Edge survived steel stairs and the ring post to the midsection as Main Event Jey attempted to drive the fight out of his opponent.

    It did not work.

Edge survived a superkick and caught Uso with a spear to win the match and cash his ticket to Fastlane.

After the match, he stared down Bryan, opening him up to a spear from Reigns, who stood tall to close out the show.

    Result

    Edge defeated Uso

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

The match was good, the focus remained on the dynamic between Edge and Bryan, and Reigns put an exclamation point on the hype for the Fastlane main event.

All of those things considered, this was a successful show-closing segment.

That Uso was able to shine to the extent he did, really looking good as he dominated the action and put Edge on the defensive, only added to the overall quality of it.

On a night when WWE needed to generate excitement for a show that feels very much like a filler card, they hit it out of the ballpark, creating an air of mystery around the two sets of tag titles, adding layers to the women’s storylines, further hinting at intensifying dislike between Edge and Bryan, and putting Reigns at the forefront as the show came to an end.

SmackDown remains the best property in WWE, and it has not really been close since Reigns returned to the show last August.

WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 17

Sana Ejaz Khan

    Credit: WWE.com

This week's episode of NXT featured appearances from several champions and a healthy mix of singles and tag team matches from the men's and women's divisions.

Jordan Devlin returned to NXT this week to establish himself as the rightful cruiserweight champion. He has been calling out Santos Escobar for weeks and was looking for a confrontation with the man he sees as an imposter champion.

Newcomer Zoey Stark was back in action against Dakota Kai. The Captain of Team Kick was not in a good mood after losing the NXT women's tag titles the same night she and Raquel Gonzalez were awarded the belts, so she was looking to take out her frustration on Stark.

We also saw Dexter Lumis face Austin Theory. The Artist has been tormenting the Gargano clan for weeks but after Johnny Gargano told Theory that Lumis insulted his abs, the battle was on.

Breezango faced Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde and LA Knight made his in-ring debut after making his first appearance at the most recent TakeOver event.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of NXT.

Austin Theory vs. Dexter Lumis

1 OF 6

Gargano and Candice LeRae were at home this week but they sent Theory a set of gear that looked like Gargano's attire as a motivational gift. The match started with Theory taking Lumis out of the ring right away. He slammed Lumis's head into the announce table a few times as the show cut to a break.

We returned to see Theory hit a fallaway slam for a quick two-count. Lumis took a little more damage before he hit a spinebuster out of nowhere to give himself some time to get his bearings.

He started to build some momentum as he hit a jumping leg drop for a near-fall. The Artist dropped his opponent with a slingshot suplex. Theory was not phased by one of his mind games and drilled him with a forearm to the face for a close two-count.

Lumis knocked him down with a clothesline but then offered him his hand to help him up. Theory took it and tried to hug him. Lumis used the opportunity to put on a chokehold but Theory broke free. Lumis countered his finisher and locked the hold in again for the win.

    Grade: B-

    Analysis

It's hard to tell what we are supposed to feel by watching this story unfold. Should we feel bad for Theory or are we supposed to be on Lumis's side? Should we hope they unite against Gargano at some point? The messaging has been inconsistent, to say the least.

The match was good and let both guys show off their athleticism. It wasn't a barnburner but it was a good start to what is sure to be a feud that gives us a handful of matches in the coming weeks.

Lumis is an interesting character but it sometimes feels like WWE doesn't know what to do with him. As for Theory, he has his upsides but his current gimmick of being Gargano's slightly dim lackey isn't doing him any favors.

Breezango vs. Legado Del Fantasma

2 OF 6

Mendoza tried to get an early advantage but Fandango saw him coming and knocked him down with one quick shot. He also fought off Wilde before he brought in Tyler Breeze for a double-team and a two-count.

Legado del Fantasma was able to turn the tables when Fandango got back in the ring. Mendoza knocked him off the top rope to the floor with a running kick as we went to a commercial.

We came back just as Dango sent Mendoza over the barricade. Prince Pretty got the hot tag and took it to Wilde with a flurry of quick strikes. He locked Wilde in a half crab submission but was forced to break it. Mendoza broke up a pin to save his partner after a Supermodel Kick from Breeze.

Wilde made a blind tag that allowed Legado del Fantasma to hit a tag team finisher for the win. After the match was over, Devlin came out for a confrontation with Escobar.

The Emperor of Lucha Libre challenged Devlin to a match at TakeOver: Stand and Deliver. Devlin hit a headbutt and a suplex before running with his title.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

This was a fun, energetic tag team match. All four of the men involved looked great, and the lack of interference from Escobar was a refreshing change from how heel teams are usually booked.

Wilde and Mendoza often play second fiddle to Escobar, so it was nice to see them get a win on their own for once.

Breeze looked especially crisp in the ring this week. He is a great technical wrestler who is often overlooked due to his comedic gimmick. He and Fandango can get just as physical as anyone else.

Escobar and Devlin will have a good performance when they eventually battle for the cruiserweight title. It will be interesting to see if WWE adds a special stipulation.

Dakota Kai vs. Zoey Stark

3 OF 6

Kai seemed to be back to her usual self as she made her way to the ring to face Stark. Raquel Gonzalez always looks angry, so it was hard to tell how she was feeling about losing the tag titles on their first night as champions.

They had a nice exchange of basics to get things going. Stark brought Kai down in a hammerlock and started to work on her arm.

Captain Kota was able to get Stark in the corner and nail her with a running kick to the face for a two-count. The newcomer hit a slingshot crossbody from the ring to the floor as the show went to a commercial.

We returned to see Kai and Stark take each other down with simultaneous clotheslines. Stark began to build up a head of steam with a string of quick offensive maneuvers.

Captain Kota nailed her with a superkick as she came flying into the ring from the top rope, but she was unable to get the pin. After a few more moves, Kai hit the Kota Kick for the pin and the win.

    Grade: A-

    Analysis

This started as a relatively normal match. They locked up, traded some standard moves and sold for each other. The second half is when everything started to click.

Both women used just about everything trick they had up their sleeves to turn this into one of the better singles matches either competitor has had in quite some time.

Kai is always a reliable performer, so seeing her step up was no surprise. This was a breakout performance for Stark and will likely lead to her getting a lot more screen time in the coming weeks.

Marcel Barthel vs. Tommaso Ciampa

4 OF 6

As Marcel Barthel was making his entrance, Tommaso Ciampa attacked Fabian Aichner and threw him over the barricade. The match started and Ciampa went right after Barthel.

Once he was able to gather himself, Barthel wrestled Ciampa down to the mat and kept him grounded with a headlock. Aichner recovered and made his way back to ringside to watch Barthel choke Ciampa against the middle rope while talking trash into the camera.

Ciampa sent Barthel into Aichner before hitting him with the Widow's Bell DDT for the win. Imperium's music hit and Walter appeared on the stage. He signaled the rest of Imperium to attack Ciampa as he got into the ring.

    Grade: B+

    Analysis

We don't get to see Barthel compete in singles matches often. It was nice to see him get a chance to show off his skills without having to give a partner equal time.

This was a physical contest with a lot to like. It was a little on the short side but they had to leave time for Walter's return, so it wasn't like this was a throwaway segment.

A feud between Walter and Ciampa is an interesting prospect. It would be a war we would be lucky to witness.

LA Knight vs. August Grey

5 OF 6

The former Eli Drake had his first WWE match this week since being a developmental athlete in 2014. His first opponent was August Grey.

Knight easily took control but Bronson Reed came out to distract him. The big man destroyed Knight's jacket and it almost allowed Grey to roll him up for the win.

Knight made a quick comeback and hit his finisher for an easy win.

    Grade: C

    Analysis

This was the kind of match you would expect for a new talent. Knight looked dominant and picked up a quick victory. What made this slightly different was the use of Reed.

WWE doesn't always put new talents right into feuds. It lets them get a few wins under their belt before putting them into a storyline. WWE is having Drake start a feud with Reed immediately, so management must see something in him.

Opening Segment and Main Event

6 OF 6

Finn Balor opened the show in the ring and immediately called out Karrion Kross. The former champions said now that they have settled their other issues, they can focus on facing each other and proving which Superstar is the rightful NXT champion.

Balor said Kross doesn't have what it takes to beat him but Kross seemed confident that he would regain the belt at the next TakeOver special.

Scarlett said something about seeing this in the cards and gives some ominous message about two champions draped in gold. This led to the NXT tag team champions, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch, coming out and declaring Balor should be facing Pete Dunne, not Kross.

Scarlett challenged them to defend the tag titles against Balor and Kross. She worked her magic and talked them into it by using some manipulative language of both the verbal and body variety. This match closed the show as the main event.

Kross started strong and wore Burch down with a bearhug. He hit both champions with a suplex at the same time and Burch appeared to take a bad bump. The show went to a break with the ref checking on him.

Lorcan had the upper-hand against Balot until the NXT champion hit an overhead kick. Lorcan prevented a tag but Balor started building momentum anyway. He hit a sling blade on the floor followed by a running dropkick that sent Lorcan into Scarlett by mistake. Balor checked on her but Kross lost his mind and started destroying Balor.

Lorcan was able to capitalize and score the pin to retain the titles, but it didn't save him from Kross' fury.

    Grade: B-

    Analysis

This was a good way to keep Kross and Balor together without forcing them into some kind of match against each other before TakeOver.

Hopefully, Burch is not injured and it was just a minor issue. He and Lorcan are great as tag team champions and it would be a shame if an injury derailed their momentum.

This was a decent main event but it was nowhere near the best thing we saw all night. That honor goes to Kai and Stark.
