WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Highlights and Analysis from April 16

Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee joined Michael Cole at the commentary table Friday night for the SmackDown after WrestleMania 37, where Roman Reigns dominated the competition and defeated both Edge and Daniel Bryan to retain the Universal Championship.

How did the former No. 1 contenders look to rebound and what did The Head of the Table have to say in the wake of his emphatic victory?

Find out now with this recap of a Friday’s broadcast, which also featured a big tag team title defense by Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, as well as the latest in the rivalry between the Mysterios and Alpha Academy.

Match Card

1 OF 8

    Announced for Friday's show:

    • SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Street Profits vs. Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode
    • Rey Mysterio (with Dominik) vs. Otis (with Chad Gable)

    Coverage begins at 8 p.m.

The Head of the Table at the Start of the Show

2 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Universal champion Roman Reigns, flanked by "The Right Hand Man" Jey Uso and Paul Heyman, kicked off Friday's episode of SmackDown.

Heyman put over Daniel Bryan and Edge's Hall of Fame credentials before handing the mic over to The Tribal Chief. The champion said no one wants to fight him because of what he does to Hall of Famers. He humbles them and no one wants any part of that.

He ordered Heyman to tell WWE to cut the check and fire up the jet because he's out of there.

Before they could leave, Cesaro made his way to the ring. Before he could address The Head of the Table, Cesaro watched as Reigns, Uso, and Heyman exited, refusing to acknowledge the new threat to the title.

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

Reigns as the uber-arrogant heel who touts his own dominance despite interference from Uso is simply outstanding. He was so confident in himself following his win over Edge and Bryan that he suggested no one in their right mind wanted to face him.

When Cesaro stepped up, he turned tail and refused to acknowledge the existence of his potential opponent.

Ironic, considering Reigns' constant insistence that he is acknowledged himself

Cesaro is exactly the right challenger at exactly the right time. While there is a minuscule likelihood he dethrones Reigns, a feud with The Big Dog is exactly the sort of program that will continue to establish The Swiss Superman as a genuine main event performer and credible title contender.

Rey Mysterio vs. Otis

3 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The rivalry between the Mysterios and Alpha Academy continued Friday as the massive Otis battled WWE’s biggest little man, Rey Mysterio.

The future Hall of Famer overcame the strength advantage of his opponent, rocking him with a running knee. Moments later, he dropped Otis across the middle rope and delivered the 619.

Mysterio launched himself from the top rope but Otis caught him. Mysterio shifted his weight, forced a rollup, and scored the win.

    Result

    Mysterio defeated Otis

    Grade

    C-

    Analysis

There wasn’t much to this one, nor did it particularly advance the ongoing rivalry between the two teams. It was, instead, a match that existed solely to remind fans the duos continue to feud.

There is an argument to be made that Otis should not be losing, especially as WWE tries to build him into a dominant big man heel, but the company has never hesitated to book finishes like this one, regardless of the repercussions on the talent.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

4 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Sami Zayn made his way to the ring and wasted little time spouting conspiracy theories and excuses for his loss at WrestleMania, laying the blame at the feet of Logan Paul. He would not be denied his vindication, he said, and demanded a match with Kevin Owens.

“There’s no one to provide a distraction, no way for you to steal a win,” he said before Owens made his way to the ring.

Owens took the fight to Zayn after the break, pummeling him on the floor. Zayn created separation and seized control of the match, driving Owens throat-first into the ring ropes. KO fought back and sent Zayn bouncing off the top rope with a release front suplex.

The competitors fought to the top rope, where Zayn stunned his former friend and delivered a sunset flip powerbomb for a near-fall as the show headed back to the break.

Owens flattened Zayn and added a swanton bomb as the show returned from the commercial.

Zayn tried to bail out of the ring but Owens brought him back in and delivered a fisherman neckberaker for across the knee for two. Zayn evaded one stunned and raked the eyes of his opponent. Zayn escaped up the ramp, gladly losing via countout.

Owens rushed the ramp, fought Zayn back to the ring and delivered a stunner to put an exclamation point on things.

After the match, cameras caught up with new Intercontinental champion Apollo Crews and his new associate, Commander Azeez. Crews christened the move formerly known as the Samoan Spike, used by Azeez, as the Nigerian Nail.

    Result

    Owens defeated Zayn via countout

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

Even a relatively mundane Owens-Zayn match is still pretty damn good, a testament to the performers and their chemistry with each other.

This was hurt by the commercial breaks and the fact that the match was broken into pieces, with no real chance to establish flow or any story to speak of. Still, it was an entertaining romp that didn’t really add to the feud, but damn sure ensured it will continue.

Look for the latest chapter as soon as the Backlash pay-per-view on May 16 as neither really has anything else better to do between now and then.

SmackDown Women's Championship CelebrationThe Street Profits Made Their Way to T

5 OF 8

    Credit: WWE

The Street Profits made their way to the ring for a SmackDown Women’s Championship celebration featuring Brianca Belair but first, threw to a beautifully produced video package highlighting The EST’s win over Sasha Banks at WrestleMania.

From there, the new champion made her way to the ring, joining husband Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins in the ring for her first promo as new titleholder.

Belair said she feels like she has been floating since WrestleMania, then said calling herself The EST is not cockiness or arrogance. It’s just about being herself. She reminded Banks that she left her with a little something to remember her by if she tries to step to her again.

Belair ended her celebration by telling Ford to go get the tag titles because “we only wear gold in this house.”

An infuriated Banks walked out on an interview with Kayla Braxton and moments later, Bayley spoke to the reporter, issuing a challenge to Belair for a title opportunity.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

This was never meant to be anything more than a celebratory promo from Belair and in that regard, it worked. She was overjoyed, charismatic and made sure those potentially tuning in for the first time knew exactly what she is all about.

Banks being infuriated makes sense, as does Bayley’s attempt to jump right back into the title picture without earning her way there. Both brief glimpses of the future of the division were true to those particular characters and set Belair up with two ready-made programs.

There are far worse ways to spotlight your new champion than by having her battle two of the most decorated and celebrated women of all time.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match

6 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The SmackDown Tag Team Championships were up for grabs in the night’s next match as Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode defended against The Street Profits. Ford and Dawkins rolled early, taking the fight to the champions and leaving them reeling ahead of the night’s latest commercial break.

The champions worked over Dawkins, isolating him from his partner and keeping him grounded. The big man caught Ziggler, launched him into the ring post with a slingshot and inched toward Ford.

The lightning-quick babyface downed both competitors with dropkicks, then added a clothesline for good measure. A standing moonsault to Roode nearly earned Ford the victory but the champion shot his shoulder off the mat for two.

Dawkins flattened Roode and Ford delivered the frog splash, but Ziggler broke up the pin. As the babyfaces rolled, Ziggler executed a blind tag and dropped Ford with a Zig Zag for the pinfall victory and successful title retention.

    Result

Ziggler and Roode defeated The Street Profits

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Just when you thought it was a given that WWE would follow up Belair’s win with her husband Ford’s tag title victory, the company pulls the carpet out from under you by booking a clean heel victory.

    And with good reason.

Ziggler and Roode need the credibility. Yes, they are tag team champions but they don’t exactly have a long and illustrious run with the titles. They needed a definitive win and after last week’s Fatal 4-Way victory, this straight tag match win further solidifies their status as the top team in the division.

With that said, theirs is definitely a reign that feels like it could end any given week. Considering how popular the Street Profits are, not to mention the potential of the Mysterios and Alpha Academy, their run with the titles may not be all that long-lived.

Natalya vs. Shayna Baszler

7 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Natalya battled Shayna Baszler in the night’s next match.

The Queen of Harts survived an early onslaught by The Submission Magician and built momentum for herself. Nia Jax, sensing things were not going in her partner’s favor, hopped on the apron to provide a distraction.

Natalya shook it off and sent her opponent into her own tag team partner. Natalya scored the rollup victory for the pin-fall victory.

After the match, Tamina rocked Jax with a super kick and stood tall with her partner to close out the segment.

    Result

    Natalya defeated Baszler

    Grade

    D

    Analysis

This was certainly a thing that happened.

The match did nothing to benefit Natalya in that it was such a fluke rollup that no one will buy it seriously. Tamina rocking Jax wasn’t even a particularly cool development because we saw the two exchange blows at WrestleMania.

This was a retread that accomplished little and failed to build genuine excitement for the teams’ next match.

Cesaro vs. Jey Uso

8 OF 8

    Credit: WWE

The main event of the night saw Cesaro seek to prove himself as a viable contender to Roman Reigns as he battled “Main Event” Jey Uso.

Uso controlled heading into the final commercial break of the night but Cesaro fought his way back into the match. He delivered a deadlift suplex to the awe of the commentary team and added a springboard corkscrew uppercut for a two-count.

Uso kicked his way out of the swing, but ate another uppercut. He recovered and delivered a neckbreaker for a near-fall.

Uso talked trash, slapping Cesaro repeatedly. The Swiss Superman added a flurry of strikes, stunning Uso and following up with a clothesline for another near-fall as Michael Cole touted the toughness of the contest. Cesaro downed Uso and delivered the swing, only for Seth Rollins to attack from out of nowhere.

The Architect, seething following his WrestleMania loss, left Cesaro lying. At the top of the ramp, he said nothing was settled between them because he is the “end all, be all of this industry.”

    Result

    Cesaro defeated Uso via disqualification

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Cesaro and Uso were hitting their stride just as Rollins interfered, robbing fans of a definitive conclusion of the match.

What Rollins’ victory does is set up a potential three-way feud over the Universal Championship or, at the very least, keeps the prospects of Cesaro challenging alive while he settles things with Rollins.

The concern is that WWE will do what it does and book a finish in Cesaro’s inevitable next match with Rollins in which all of the goodwill built at WrestleMania is lost as The Architect gets his win back. It will be imperative for WWE to avoid that particular finish or risk leaving fans wondering why it even bothered to put The Swiss Superman over on wrestling’s biggest stage.

The absence of Reigns at the end of the show would seem to suggest Cesaro may not be his next pay-per-view opponent. Though, the lack of Edge and Bryan on tonight’s show would seem to suggest they’re out of the picture, too.

WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 13

Sana Ejaz Khan

    Credit: WWE.com

NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver redefined the landscape of WWE NXT. The April 13 edition of the black-and-gold brand was the aftermath of that show as well as the debut of NXT on Tuesday nights.

New champions Karrion Kross and Raquel Gonzalez were set to appear and address their title victories while re-establishing the hierarchy in their divisions. Finn Balor and Io Shirai were sure to be watching closely.

MSK also won new gold at TakeOver but did not choose to wait, putting the NXT Tag Team Championships on the line against Killian Dain and Drake Maverick. Now officially the undisputed NXT cruiserweight champion, Santos Escobar issued an open challenge to the cruiserweight division.

The Way has got in the way of many top stars, so it was only a matter of time before they banded together. Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Indi Hartwell and Austin Theory would battle the team of Bronson Reed, Ember Moon, Shotzi Blackheart and Dexter Lumis.

Nothing has kept Leon Ruff and Isaiah "Swerve" Scott apart, so William Regal wanted them to settle their differences. These heated rivals would do battle.

After several weeks of build, tonight was also the promised night where Franky Monet would arrive in NXT.

This was a chance for the black-and-gold brand to begin a new era. With so many new champions, anything could happen with fresh challenges to come in every division.

Karrion Kross Promises to Remain at the Top of NXT for a Long Time to Come

1 OF 7

Karrion Kross and Scarlett arrived to complete their proclamation. The time had arrived, and The Herald of Doomsday had his title back. He made an emphatic statement on the future of NXT, demanding competition that could feed his hunger.

    Grade

    D+

    Analysis

This promo showed one of NXT's biggest problems. Kross has been built as a monster, who lets his actions and Scarlett speak for me. When he has spoken in the past, his words dripped with malice. He only said what he needed to say. He has the talent on the mic to deliver but not with this much standard WWE scripting.

His first words since becoming the top guy in NXT made him sound like just another Superstar. He threw out a few signature catchphrases and put himself over as the hungriest man in the hungriest locker room. He especially seemed uncertain how to deal with a few loud fans.

NXT is built so much on the performances over the characters. Kross has been established more as a Raw or SmackDown character than one made for the black-and-gold brand. If NXT continues to script him like this, the company will lose that spark that makes The Herald of Doomsday unique.

NXT Tag Team Championships: MSK (c) vs. Killian Dain and Drake Maverick

2 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

As always, Drake Maverick found himself the weak link early in this match-up, isolated by MSK. However, Killian Dain got back into the action with more urgency, knowing what was on the line. The Beast of Belfast saved his partner from a pinfall and carried him to the corner.

Wes Lee and Nash Carter used a series of impressive tag team maneuvers to nearly take the win. Dain and Maverick fired back with their own tag team synergy, but it backfired as they miscommunicated late. MSK took out Dain then hit End Transmission on Maverick to win.

Alexander Wolfe walked out to distract The Beast of Belfast, and Imperium made a statement, taking out Dain with malice.

    Result

MSK def. Dain and Maverick by pinfall to retain the NXT Tag Team Championships.

    Grade

    B

    Analysis

Despite the potential of this match-up, MSK vs. Maverick and Dain was no better than their first match together. Lee and Carter continue to pull impressive high-flying offense in every match. It just does not land as well without a capable heel team to work off them.

Still, for a random NXT title defense, this was more than good enough. It was fun action between capable teams where MSK built more momentum without taking away from the potential threat of Dain and Maverick as an odd pairing that works well together.

Dain and Maverick vs. Imperium could be interesting. Fabian Aichner and Marcel Bartel deserve more opportunities than they have been given lately beyond backing up WALTER.

Mercedes Martinez vs. Jessi Kamea

3 OF 7

NXT showed exclusive footage of both Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly following their NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver match. Afterward, they had to stretchered to a nearby medical facility where Cole still cursed out O'Reilly.

Mercedes Martinez wanted her money back from Robert Stone, but Jessi Kamea got in her way. The two met in the ring where Kamea took over the action early. Martinez turned it around with an emphatic over the shoulder back-to-belly piledriver for the win.

After her victory, she choked out Stone until he gave her the money. She then told commentary to give Raquel Gonzalez a message that she was after the NXT Women's Championship. Later in the night Martinez got in Zoey Stark's face for assuming she had a shot at the champion over the veteran.

    Result

    Martinez def. Kamea by pinfall.

    Grade

    C

    Analysis

This angle did not mean much in the long run, but at least it got Martinez back on television. She has moved past The Robert Stone Brand and called her shot on the NXT women's champion. That could be the perfect first rivalry for Gonzalez.

The champion needs a veteran challenger. Few in NXT are better than Martinez. Once she has completed her business with Io Shirai, Gonzalez will need someone like the hard-hitting technical veteran.

Kamea got squashed here, but she is starting to find her footing in an NXT ring. She could be a future star for NXT, though that may only come once she has moved past Stone.

NXT Cruiserweight Championship: Santos Escobar (c) vs. Kushida

4 OF 7

Santos Escobar explained that his legacy is as a champion, and he would defeat anyone that stepped up to him in an open challenge title match. Kushida answered the call, sending the NXT cruiserweight champion out of the ring with a dropkick.

Escobar sent Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde to the back, certain he could beat Kushida. He was quickly overwhelmed by the speed of the Japanese Superstar. The champion caught Kushida outside by slamming him into the steel steps. He followed up with a Boston crab on the steps into the post.

The cruiserweight champion continued to wear out his challenger. Kushida answered the Phantom Driver with an atomic drop and a series of strikes that set him up for a double underhook superplex. A second double underhook suplex nearly put the match away.

Both men were exhausted, missing their signature moves. Once again, Kushida reversed the Phantom Driver, starting a series of pinfall attempts that allowed Kushida to stack up Escobar and win.

William Regal congratulated Kushida backstage, only fro Jordan Devlin to interrupt. He made clear he would get his own shot at that gold soon. Tomasso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher warned MSK of their title aspirations.

    Result

Kushida def. Escobar by pinfall to become the new NXT cruiserweight champion.

    Grade

    A-

    Analysis

That was a complete shock. After doing so much to establish Escobar as the one-and-only cruiserweight champion, Kushida arrives to knock him down a peg. Adding a true surprise to the night elevated the show as a whole.

While Escobar was a great champion, he was running low on challengers. The division just got a bold restart that it needed. The former champion is on the hunt. The Irish Ace has also staked his claim. There are many great matches now in store.

The match was good, though it felt like they did not quite hit their highest gear. These two have a great match in store down the line.

Franky Monet Arrives to Interrupt Raquel Gonzalez's Championship Celebration

5 OF 7

Dakota Kai introduced Raquel Gonzalez. The NXT women's champion explained that every day before this night had built her to this moment. She put Kai over as instrumental to her rise, seeing her potential when no one else would.

The lights went out, and Franky Monet arrived. With her dog in hand, she established that the NXT women's division was her division now. Gonzalez and Monet almost came to blows, but the newcomer stepped away for the moment.

Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair arrived to celebrate with the new NXT women's champion. The best friends hugged in the center of the ring, celebrating their rise to gold together.

William Regal put over another recent signing for the women's division. It was announced that Sarray would debut next week.

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

WWE rarely lets the veils drop and celebrates the accomplishments of talent as friends. It was awesome to see Ripley and Belair together with Gonzalez, standing as champion. The three women truly got their start in the Mae Young Classic and have never looked back.

For the long term story, Monet has arrived. La Guera Loca was one of the best women outside WWE for the past few years. Her arrival only solidifies how overwhelmingly talent the NXT women's division is. While she and Gonzalez should not immediately clash, at the right time, they can do something special.

Leon Ruff vs. Isaiah "Swerve" Scott

6 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Isaiah "Swerve" Scott put himself over, ready to move past Leon Ruff after this match. Pete Dunne established that he was after gold again and would not stop until he was champion. Roderick Strong and his wife Marina Shafir handed in his papers to William Regal, stating that he was done.

Swerve and Ruff played nice until the bell rang, but their brawl from the past few weeks continued once the referee allowed. The underdog looked to have Scott's number, nearly winning off a springboard stunner as well as a Frankensteiner.

Ruff hit a rebound clotheline that was answered by a discus lariat from Swerve. Recovering quickly, Ruff nearly stole the win with a jackknife pin. However, Scott barely kicked out then hit the JML Driver for the win.

Ruff attacked Scott backstage, making clear that despite losing clean, he was not done with Swerve.

    Result

    Swerve def. Ruff by pinfall.

    Grade

    B+

    Analysis

This was a great near-end to this rivalry. Both men fought hard, and the nearfalls in this contest sold that either man could win. It was exciting and easily the strongest match on the show.

It took a while, but Swerve is finally building momentum as a heel. Hopefully, he gets even more once this rivalry is over. He and Ruff have looked great together and deserve an NXT main event for their final fight.

Either Swerve will finally put an end to this fight with Ruff, or the new attitude shown by Ruff backstage could be a sign that these two could reconcile and become an exciting heel tag team together.

Dexter Lumis, Bronson Reed, Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart vs. The Way

7 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

The Way promised victory in their first eight-man tag match together, but Indi Hartwell was a little too focused on getting in the same ring as Dexter Lumis.

Hartwell was kept out of the action whenever Lumis was nearby. The women could not directly fight the men in this match, but that did not stop any of the women from attacking everyone. Ember Moon caught Johnny Gargano with a suicide dive, and Candice LeRae DDTed Lumis outside.

After The Colossal threw Shotzi Blackheart onto the crowd outside, Lumis trapped Johnny Wrestling in the Silence. Hartwell got herself intentionally taken backstage by The Tortured Artist. Moon hit an Eclipse off Reed's shoulder, and no one could stop Reed from hitting the Tsunami on Austin Theory to win.

    Result

Reed, Lumis, Moon and Blackheart def. The Way by pinfall.

    Grade

    A-

    Analysis

This was a ridiculous but very fun main event for the night. Reed worked really really off of Moon and Blackheart, and Gargano and LeRae's equal inability to even slow The Colossal put him over in a major way.

Hartwell got what she wanted, showing that The Way was too dysfunctional to actually pull out a victory. Reed got a big win over Gargano that should set him up for a rematch soon for the NXT North American Championship.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of The Way after a night that is certain to break the group's confidence.
