WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from December 30

John Cena kept a 20-year streak intact Friday night, returning to SmackDown for a year-closing main event in which he partnered with Kevin Owens to battle Sami Zayn and Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns.

Cena's first, and only, match of 2022 headlined an episode that also saw a defense of the SmackDown Women's Championship by Ronda Rousey and the latest in the battle for supremacy between The Brawling Brutes and The Bloodline.

Match Card

1 OF 7
    • John Cena and Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn
    • Sheamus vs. Solo SIkoa
    • SmackDown Women's Championship Match: Raquel Rodriguez vs. Ronda Rousey

Bray Wyatt Kicked Off SmackDown

2 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Bray Wyatt kicked off the night's broadcast and immediately apologized for his actions a week ago, which saw him attack an innocent cameraman. LA Knight interrupted, though,

After Knight issued a challenge for a match at Royal Rumble and Wyatt accepted, Uncle Howdy made his way to the ring. He came face-to-face with Wyatt, then stood by his side before dropping the former WWE champion with Sister Abigail and leaving Knight to ask, "what is going on?!"

This was a noteworthy start to the show. It once again put Howdy in the arena and this time, his actions suggest he might not actually be on the same side as Wyatt. Knight audibly questioning what is going on reflects the audience's sentiment as they try to figure out the pieces of the puzzle Wyatt and the creative forces at play are producing.

The Rumble match between Wyatt and Knight should be good and, more importantly, prevents the former from having to lose in the actual Royal Rumble.

    • "Deep down, I don't think of myself as a good person, though I really do try."
    • "You can't even finish a sentence, then you get all embarrassed and take it out on a poor cameraman," Knight said, mocking Wyatt.
    • "You pay one of your goons to come down here in a Captain Howdy outfit..."
    • "You used to be something. You used to be a force," Knight said, taunting Wyatt. "Week after week, all you've proven yourself to be is a fraud. A broke-down loser."
    • Uncle Howdy entered the arena, stepping through what appeared to be an enflamed doorway, complete with his own theme music.

Sheamus vs. Solo Sikoa

4 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

An appropriately physical match kicked off the night's in-ring action as The Brawling Brutes' Sheamus battled The Bloodline's Solo Sikoa one-on-one. Butch and Ridge Holland accompanied The Celtic Warrior while The Usos backed up their brother.

Sheamus fought from underneath and surged late but a momentary distraction caused by his attack on Jimmy and Jey allowed Sikoa to drive him into the post and deliver a Samoan Spike for the pinfall victory.

After the match, The Bloodline wiped out Butch and Holland and beat down Sheamus until Drew McIntyre returned for the first time since Survivor Series and made the save.

A bit more seasoning for Sikoa and this would have been a real banger but as it is, this was a fine, competitive match that spotlighted the young star while continuing to put over the grittiness of Sheamus at this point in his Hall of Fame career.

McIntyre making the save makes sense, not only because of his respect for Sheamus but because of the unfinished business he has with Sikoa. It was the NXT export who cost The Scottish Warrior the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship back at Clash At The Castle and the company has done a fantastic job with the slow burn rather than jumping at the first opportunity to book the match.

    Result

    Sikoa pinned Sheamus

    Grade

    B-

    Top Moments

    • Sheamus wiped out The Usos at ringside, allowing Sikoa to grab him by the arm and drive him into the ring post.
    • The McIntyre save drew a big pop, a testament to his continued popularity with the WWE fans.

SmackDown Women's Championship Match: Raquel Rodriguez vs. Ronda Rousey

5 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Driven by fury following multiple attacks that left her with an injured arm, Raquel Rodriguez wasted little time taking the fight to SmackDown Women's Champion Ronda Rousey in their title bout Friday night.

Rousey capitalized on an ill-fated blind charge heading into the break and targeted the arm, looking to exploit it to her advantage as she seized control. A big vertical suplex coming out of the break earned Rodriguez a two-count.

Later, interference from Shayna Baszler went unpunished by the official and moments later, a recovered Rousey applied the armbar and pulled her from the top rope to the mat below, forcing an immediate tapout.

With zero time to waste, Charlotte Flair returned to WWE, months after losing the same SmackDown Women's Championship to Rousey, and issued a challenge for a match tonight. Rousey accepted and Flair proceeded to escape and score a pin on Rousey to win the title.

This is some expert Jedi mind trickery here as Triple H and the creative team have the crowd cheering Flair in a way she had not been in quite some time, partly due to the surprise but, also, because they really don't like Rousey that much more.

Of course, it will be interesting to see if Flair can retain that popularity as it becomes clear that she is in her 14th reign as champion and literally just strolled back in and won the gold. With that said, she is a standard-bearer for women's wrestling and has more than earned her spot.

A new look, a new theme song, and a different presentation helped pique interest in The Queen once more. Whether Triple H and Co. can help preserve that interest is the real question moving forward.

As for Rodriguez, she looked very good and was clearly the better of the two wrestlers. It would not be surprising to see her in a high-profile match or position against Flair right around WrestleMania 39.

    Result

Rousey defeated Rodriguez to retain; Flair defeated Rousey to win the title

    Grade

    B+

    Top Moments

    • "Oh, we got a bleeder!" Rousey taunted as she continued her domination of Rodriguez.
    • Rousey grabbed Rodriguez's arm but the challenger powered through it spilled to the floor and powerbombed the champion onto the ring apron.
    • Rodriguez had the title won but Baszler interfered on behalf of the champion as the commentary team called for her dismissal from ringside. It did not come.

Gunther's Path of Destruction

6 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Intercontinental champion Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci hit the ring for a promo segment but Braun Strowman interrupted relatively quickly.

Strowman issued a challenge for an IC title match but Gunther turned to walk away. Strowman insisted and a brawl broke out. The Monster Among Monsters launched himself at The Ring General but crashed through the timekeeper's barricade. Imperium beat him down before Gunther targeted the left arm of his top contender.

Vinci and Kaiser fended off referees and officials but a chair-toting Ricochet chased the heels off.

It appears destined to be Strowman who, potentially, ends Gunther's run. At the very least, is his latest and greatest challenger. Either way, it was nice to see the heel get some heat back by punishing Strowman and potentially injuring him after running like a coward the last handful of times he was in the big man's vicinity.

The inevitable showdown will have heat and, if recent history is any indication, Gunther will probably give Strowman his best match to date.

    Grade

    C+

    Top Moments

    • Backstage, Sami Zayn asked Roman Reigns if he is upset about the crowd chanting his name instead of The Tribal Chief, to which the Undisputed WWE Universal champion laughed it off.
    • Some friendly backstage competition gave way to a heated exchange between Hit Row and Ricochet after the latter referred to Top Dolla as "Flop Dolla," in response to his recent botched dive.
    • Michael Cole officially announced Wyatt vs. Knight for Royal Rumble as the "Mountain Dew Pitch Black" match but did not go into further detail.

John Cena and Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn

7 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

John Cena may have returned to the ring for the first time in 2022 as part of Friday's main event tag team match but the story of the first half was Sami Zayn, who sought to impress Roman Reigns as The Bloodline representatives battled The Greatest of All Time and Kevin Owens.

The heels isolated and beat down Owens through the commercial break, cutting him off from Cena. When it looked like a hot tag might be coming, The Tribal Chief pulled Cena off the apron.

Cena eventually exploded into the match, wiped out Reigns with an Attitude Adjustment and watched as Owens finished Zayn with a Stunner for the win.

The match was seriously abbreviated, having only 10 minutes once the entrances and final commercials wrapped up. The action was abrupt and rushed, with a brief heat segment on Owens before the Cena hot tag. By the time he finally hit the ring to spark the comeback, it was over.

All of the hype and Cena's involvement was limited to a few moves before it went home.

With that said, the energy he brought to the match and his selflessness when it came to giving Owens the shine was the stuff of a real pro. His involvement may have been short-lived but he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand and really help put over Owens by sharing the spotlight with him and allowing him to get the pin on Zayn.

How will Reigns react to Zayn failing to end the KO problem and, worse, losing the match for The Bloodline? That will be the story to watch heading into 2023.

    Result

Cena and Owens defeated Reigns and Zayn

    Grade

B, elevated significantly by the fun of it all and the raw energy of Cena, which is majorly missed

    Top Moments

    • Amid the pomp and circumstance of the match, Michael Cole slyly reminded the audience that Zayn is still "honorary" until that title is dropped and he had to impress Reigns and end the KO problem to make that happen. Great setup and a reminder of what's actually at play in this match.
    • "You're embarrassing yourself in front of The Tribal Chief," Owens exclaimed.
    • Owens scored a near-fall off a frog splash on Reigns.
    • The Cena hot tag was special stuff, as was the double Five Knuckle Shuffle to the heels

Welcome to ProfessionalPK,s Coverage of WWE SmackDown 23 December 2022!

Twas two sleeps before Christmas and all through SmackDown and the team of Ricochet and Braun Strowman battled Imperium in a main event, Miracle on 34th Street Fight.

The battle headlined a holiday-themed episode that also crowned a new No. 1 contender to Ronda Rousey's SmackDown Women's Championship and saw The Usos defend their historic reign as tag team champions.

Who won, what did it mean for the immediate future of the blue brand and how did each of the night's segments and matches grade out?

Find out with this recap of the December 23 Fox broadcast.

Match Card

1 OF 7
    • Miracle on 34th Street Fight: Braun Strowman and Ricochet vs. Imperium (Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci)
    • Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Hit Row vs. The Usos (c)
    • No. 1 Contender's Gauntlet Match: Liv Morgan vs. Raquel Rodriguez vs. Emma vs. Tegan Nox vs. Xia Li vs. Sonya Deville
    • Bray Wyatt Promo
    • The latest from The Bloodline

The Bloodline Kicked Off SmackDown

2 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

The Bloodline's Solo Sikoa, The Usos, Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns kicked off Friday's show with a promo segment that continued the extraordinary storytelling involving the hottest faction in professional wrestling.

Reigns vowed to smash John Cena and Kevin Owens next week in Tampa because that is what he does. From, there he turned the microphone over to Zayn. The Ultimate Opportunist cut a venomous, angry, intense promo in which he referred to KO as the dark cloud that hangs over his career and echoed The Tribal Chief's vow to win the year-end tag team main event.

This was more superb mic work from Reigns and Zayn, whose dynamic has helped fuel the best story WWE has produced, arguably, since Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho's months-long story in 2017.

The emotion of Zayn has helped him connect with audiences while Reigns stands by watching, manipulating the situation and conveying as much through his excellent facial expressions.

The moment that the divorce between Zayn and The Bloodline occurs, the fans will erupt and WWE will have its biggest babyface since Daniel Bryan.

A babyface popular enough for the company to consider pivoting from whatever WrestleMania plans it has in place to Zayn challenging The Head of the Table.

    It's that good.

    Grade

    A+

    Top Moments

    • "I found family. I found respect. They love me!" Zayn said of The Bloodline.
    • "There is a black cloud hanging over my head and its name is Kevin Owens."
    • "We. Are. The. Show!"
    • "We are going to leave you mangled!"

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Hit Row vs. The Usos

3 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

"That's not a prediction. It's a spoiler," Paul Heyman told fans of The Usos' victory over Hit Row to retain the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship prior to Friday's match.

Jimmy and Jey proved him right, overcoming the game challengers to retain and continue their history-making run as champs.

Late, Top Dolla powered Jimmy and Jey up for what appeared to be a double powerslam but his body gave out on him and the heels capitalized, delivering stereo superkicks and a 1-D for the pinfall victory.

This was a big test for Hit Row. Without Swerve Strickland, there had been rumbling among fans about Top Dolla, Ashante Thee Adonis, and B-Fab's prospects for success. Luckily, the team turned in one of the best performances of their young careers against the division standard-bearers.

Whether that is enough to earn them another opportunity in this spot remains to be seen but when presented with an opportunity to sink or swim, they did the latter. That bodes well for them and the SmackDown tag team division as a whole, which has struggled to create a bona fide roster of championship contenders despite certainly having the depth and quality.

    Result

    The Usos defeated Hit Row

    Grade

    B-

    Top Moments

    • The attempted power-up spot with Top Dolla was solid and helped to the tell the story of a powerhouse failed by his body.

Gauntlet Match to Determine the No. 1 Contender

4 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Six women battled in a Gauntlet Match for the right to challenge Ronda Rousey for the SmackDown Women's Championship, with Emma and Xia Li kicking things off. Nondescript action, though not lacking effort, concluded rather abruptly with Li scoring the pinfall on the Aussie. (Emma eliminated)

Tegan Nox entered the match next, taking the fight to Li in retaliation for the Chinese-born competitor costing her and Liv Morgan the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship a week ago.

The same fate awaited Nox as Li wiped her out with a kick to the back of the head to advance. (Nox eliminated)

The still-injured Raquel Rodriguez entered the match next as the commentary team repeatedly put over the elbow injury plaguing the former NXT Women's champion. Rodriguez overcame the targeted offense of her opponent to down her with the Chingona Bomb. (Li eliminated)

Former champion Liv Morgan entered next and took the fight directly to Rodriguez. The second-generation star powered out of the Rings of Saturn submission and continued to fight for a spot in next week's title match.

Spotty selling from Rodriguez of the elbow notwithstanding, the two had the best stretch of the match, ending with her scoring the pin. (Morgan eliminated)

A relentless, cerebral Sonya Deville attacked early and often, targeting the elbow. Rodriguez fought out, drove the former WWE official off the top rope and pinned her. (Deville eliminated)

Rousey appeared and revealed that there is one last opponent for Rodriguez before introducing Shayna Baszler. The Queen of Spades attacked the elbow but Rodriguez quickly rolled her up to win the match. (Baszler eliminated)

It may sound like a broken record, but all of this would have meant so much more if fans had any reason to care about half of the competitors in this one. The talent is there, but underwritten characters and lackluster storytelling has hurt the SmackDown division and this was a greater extension of it.

Nox just returned but was beaten. Ditto Emma. Li had a big moment last week but, despite an impressive early run, also suffered a loss. Rodriguez was pushed to the moon and, fine, that may help create a new star but the (lack of) reaction from the fans suggests they are not ready or willing to throw their support behind her.

Maybe that changes by next week.

    Result

Rodriguez defeated Baszler, Deville, Morgan, Li, Nox and Emma

    Grade

    C+

    Top Moments

    • The Morgan-Rodriguez match showed some promise and begged the question: is Rodriguez in the wrong role as a generic babyface rather than working heel as an imposing badass?

Bray Wyatt Addresses LA Knight, Uncle Howdy

5 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

One week after Uncle Howdy emerged from the backstage are and revealed that Bray Wyatt was not the man behind the mask, Wyatt took to the squared circle to demand an apology from LA Knight.

A torn, conflicted Wyatt ultimately ended the brisk segment with an attack on the cameraman, applying a mandible claw ala The Fien before staring stoically ahead.

Some may mistake this as a step back based on what we saw last week but really, it was a logical progression for Wyatt, who is coming more and more to terms with the idea that, for all of his attempts at presenting a new side of himself, he really is the monster that lies behind the different masks he has worn over the years.

Look no further than the ode to The Fiend and his recent, apparent recruiting of Alexa Bliss.

    Grade

    C+

    Top Moments

    • "Be honest! You thought it was me for a minute at least," Wyatt told the WWE Universe.
    • The stoic look on Wyatt's face after his shocking actions helped put over the story of a man losing touch with reality.

Rey Mysterio vs. Angel

6 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

Rey Mysterio returned to action Friday, battling Los Lotharios' Angel, who had Humberto lurking in his corner.

Mysterio found himself on the defensive, battling not only his opponent but the ominous presence of Karrion Kross and Scarlett watching from the stands.

He overcame the arsenal of a game Angel, though, and scored the win before challenging Kross to join him in the ring. The former NXT champion pointed at his wrist, insinuating that time is up for the legendary star.

This was a nice little showcase for Mysterio against someone in Angel who, along with Humberto, continues to be underutilized by WWE officials. With that said, the focus was on Mysterio and his budding rivalry with Kross, which is the perfect use of two guys who can be easily plugged into the main event scene as needed but are not at this point.

    Result

    Mysterio pinned Angel

    Grade

    C+

    Top Moments

    • Backstage, Emma confronted Kross and Scarlett. "Who do you think you are disrespecting a legend like Rey Mysterio?" She asked before taking exception to their treatment of Madcap Moss of late. She slapped Scarlett, prompting Kross to warn, "you have no idea what you've just done.
    • A phenomenal video package paid homage to John Cena and hyped his return on next week's show.

Miracle on 34th Street Fight: Ricochet and Braun Strowman vs. Imperium

7 OF 7

    Credit: WWE.com

The rivalry between Imperium and the duo of Ricochet and Braun Strowman continued Friday night as Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser squared off with The One and Only and The Monster Among Monsters in a Miracle on 34th Street Fight.

The wild, chaotic brawl had everything: cookies, Christmas trees, ballerinas, New Day as nutcrackers, mistletoe, Samantha Irvin involvement and another signature win for Ricochet, who earned the win with a Shooting Star Press.

This was a fun, energetic match that is not going to be confused for a wrestling classic but gave the audience a lighthearted holiday offering to cap off the WWE week.

More importantly, it continued a career renaissance for Ricochet in 2022, really highlighting him and serving as a statement to the wrestling world that he is one to keep an eye on in the new year.

    Result

    Ricochet and Strowman defeated Imperium

    Grade

B, mostly for the fun spots, added involvement of Irvin, and cameo by indie competitor Ashley D'Amboise as the ballerina

    Top Moments

    • Michael Cole explained away Gunther's absence by stating he got an early start on holiday vacation. It was a nice touch because it distances the uber-serious wrestler from the hijinx in a match of this sort.
    • A ballerina emerged from one giant gift box on the stage while NXT Tag Team champions The New Day stepped out of the other, apparently nutcrackers as they kicked Vinci and Kaiser low.
    • Strowman grabbed mistletoe and urged ring announcer Samantha Irvin to kiss Ricochet. She did and he fired up, leading to the finish. Cole actually acknowledged the couple's real-life relationship, another sign that Triple H respects his fans' intelligence and understands they have social media.
