Welcome to ProfessionalPK's coverage and recap of WWE Raw on January 2.
WWE kicked off the new year with a bang by including two big championship matches on this week's card.
Austin Theory put the United States Championship on the line against Seth Rollins, and Bianca Belair defended the Raw Women's Championship against Alexa Bliss.
With the Royal Rumble now just a few weeks away, we also saw WWE begin laying the groundwork for the annual event that kicks off The Road to WrestleMania.
Let's take a look at what happened on Monday's show.
Raw opened in chaos as The Bloodline was already at ringside attacking members of the production crew and destroying the ringside area. Jimmy Uso grabbed a headset and said they were taking over Monday Night Raw.
Kevin Owens came out onto the stage and had a conversation with Sami Zayn on the mic about why The Bloodline was staging a hostile takeover. Adam Pearce stopped KO from getting in the ring. He told The Bloodline to leave peacefully. Solo Sikoa attacked every member of security who rushed the ring.
Owens ran to the ring but was immediately overwhelmed. The locker room emptied with Superstars coming to attack The Bloodline. The Raw roster forced them to retreat into the crowd, but Pearce told them since they came to work, they would all be having matches on the show tonight.
This was certainly an energetic start to the show and gave us something different than the usual heel stable promo. KO trying to attack four men by himself made him look kind of dumb, but other than that, this worked well to get the crowd excited.
Grade: B-
The first match of the night was the Raw women's title bout between Belair and Bliss. These two fought inside of WarGames together, but after The Goddess took out The EST with a vase during their interview two weeks ago, all bets were off.
The champ nailed Bliss with a hard right hand immediately. Belair was sent out of the ring with a dropkick, but she ended up pulling Bliss out with her and swinging her into the barricade.
Bliss continued to act as if she hasn't been having blackouts and weird moments recently, so the tension kept building. We never knew if she was going to snap or not.
Somebody wearing a strange mask then distracted Bliss from the crowd. Images flashed on the big screen that seemed to send her into a frenzy. She attacked the referee and then beat down The EST.
Belair was bleeding from her chin by the time the attack was over, and the ending of this bout was met with a mixture of confusion and silence. The finish was definitely meant to be part of a larger story, so the conclusion is going to leave some fans wanting more.
Winner: Bianca Belair by DQ
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
While Pearce was assigning matches for The Bloodline during a backstage segment, he booked Elias to battle Sikoa in a Street Fight since the crooner wanted revenge for having his own guitar smashed over his back by The Street Champ.
The enforcer of The Bloodline took control by cornering Elias, but it wasn't a one-sided battle. Elias was able to get in some decent shots to keep himself in the fight.
They began using the instruments at ringside after a few minutes. A guitar was smashed, a drum kit was knocked over and we even saw a cowbell come into play.
They fought all around the ring, up the aisle and on the stage as they used whatever they could get their hands on to inflict damage. This wasn't very fast-paced or exciting most of the time, but some of the weapon spots were fun.
Hardy, a musician who was in attendance, decided to get involved by smashing a guitar over Sikoa's back, but when it had no effect on him, the singer bailed. Sikoa hit a Samoan Spike as Elias jumped off the top rope, and then he hit a side slam from the apron onto the piano for the win. The match was alright, but the finish looked great.
Winner: Solo Sikoa
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
The Usos and Zayn were put into a six-man tag match with Owens, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins by Pearce while he was deciding how to handle The Bloodline's action at the top of the show.
As soon as KO and the Profits hit the ring, they went after their opponents. Dawkins and Jimmy ended up being the first legal competitors once the ref called for the bell.
This was a very physical contest that was definitely more of a brawl than a technical showcase. Nobody was trying to work a limb or apply a headlock. They were just throwing hands and feet at whoever they could find.
Sikoa showed up to give his allies an unfair advantage that eventually led to Zayn scoring the win with a Helluva Kick on Ford. This was an entertaining fight between six guys who are all great at what they do. It may not be memorable in the long run, but it was a solid performance for the first show of 2023.
The Brawling Brutes and Drew McIntyre showed up to take out The Bloodline and end the segment.
Winners: The Bloodline
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
Otis accompanied Chad Gable to the ring for his match against Dexter Lumis. Surprisingly, Johnny Gargano was not out there with Lumis.
Lumis chased Gable around the ring a bit before taking him down with a Thesz press. The match ended up being pretty competitive in terms of both men being in control at various points.
Lumis ended up scoring the win by countering a pinfall attempt from Gable into his own cover. The match was nothing special. Gable always looks as smooth as silk, but he can only do so much when the booking is mediocre.
Winner: Dexter Lumis
Grade: C
Notable Moments and Observations
Damage CTRL came out for a promo, but they were quickly interrupted by Becky Lynch. This led to Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky taking on Lynch in a handicap match because The Man didn't want to look for her phone to call a partner.
We returned from a break to see Lynch and Sky begin the match. The Irish Lass Kicker had the match firmly in hand for the first few minutes, but the numbers eventually caught up to her.
Bayley cheered obnoxiously as her allies began to double-team and dominate Lynch. Mia Yim's music hit and she ran down to the ring to serve as The Man's partner. She got the tag and turned the tide against Damage CTRL.
The match lasted through another commercial break, so Sky and Kai had a chance to regain the upper hand. Sky ended up getting the pin on Yim with the Over The Moonsault while Becky was busy attacking Bayley.
This ended up being a pretty solid performance from all four competitors. Having Yim come out late only to end up being the one to lose is a weird choice, but having Lynch eat the pin wouldn't have made much sense either.
Winners: Damage CTRL
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
The main event of the evening saw Theory put his United States Championship on the line against the former champion, Rollins. The crowd sang along with Rollins' music and for a little while after it stopped playing.
Given the last 25 minutes of the show, they didn't need to rush into anything. They played a few mind games, and The Visionary encouraged the crowd to keep singing his music.
These guys have worked together multiple times and have continued to gain more chemistry with each encounter, so it was no surprise that this ended up being the best match of the night.
After a long, entertaining and competitive fight, Theory was able to win with a low blow and his finisher. You could almost feel the enthusiasm of the crowd get sucked out of the arena when the ref counted to three.
Winner: Austin Theory

John Cena kept a 20-year streak intact Friday night, returning to SmackDown for a year-closing main event in which he partnered with Kevin Owens to battle Sami Zayn and Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns.
Cena's first, and only, match of 2022 headlined an episode that also saw a defense of the SmackDown Women's Championship by Ronda Rousey and the latest in the battle for supremacy between The Brawling Brutes and The Bloodline.
Bray Wyatt kicked off the night's broadcast and immediately apologized for his actions a week ago, which saw him attack an innocent cameraman. LA Knight interrupted, though,
After Knight issued a challenge for a match at Royal Rumble and Wyatt accepted, Uncle Howdy made his way to the ring. He came face-to-face with Wyatt, then stood by his side before dropping the former WWE champion with Sister Abigail and leaving Knight to ask, "what is going on?!"
This was a noteworthy start to the show. It once again put Howdy in the arena and this time, his actions suggest he might not actually be on the same side as Wyatt. Knight audibly questioning what is going on reflects the audience's sentiment as they try to figure out the pieces of the puzzle Wyatt and the creative forces at play are producing.
The Rumble match between Wyatt and Knight should be good and, more importantly, prevents the former from having to lose in the actual Royal Rumble.

An appropriately physical match kicked off the night's in-ring action as The Brawling Brutes' Sheamus battled The Bloodline's Solo Sikoa one-on-one. Butch and Ridge Holland accompanied The Celtic Warrior while The Usos backed up their brother.
Sheamus fought from underneath and surged late but a momentary distraction caused by his attack on Jimmy and Jey allowed Sikoa to drive him into the post and deliver a Samoan Spike for the pinfall victory.
After the match, The Bloodline wiped out Butch and Holland and beat down Sheamus until Drew McIntyre returned for the first time since Survivor Series and made the save.
A bit more seasoning for Sikoa and this would have been a real banger but as it is, this was a fine, competitive match that spotlighted the young star while continuing to put over the grittiness of Sheamus at this point in his Hall of Fame career.
McIntyre making the save makes sense, not only because of his respect for Sheamus but because of the unfinished business he has with Sikoa. It was the NXT export who cost The Scottish Warrior the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship back at Clash At The Castle and the company has done a fantastic job with the slow burn rather than jumping at the first opportunity to book the match.
Result
Sikoa pinned Sheamus

Driven by fury following multiple attacks that left her with an injured arm, Raquel Rodriguez wasted little time taking the fight to SmackDown Women's Champion Ronda Rousey in their title bout Friday night.
Rousey capitalized on an ill-fated blind charge heading into the break and targeted the arm, looking to exploit it to her advantage as she seized control. A big vertical suplex coming out of the break earned Rodriguez a two-count.
Later, interference from Shayna Baszler went unpunished by the official and moments later, a recovered Rousey applied the armbar and pulled her from the top rope to the mat below, forcing an immediate tapout.
With zero time to waste, Charlotte Flair returned to WWE, months after losing the same SmackDown Women's Championship to Rousey, and issued a challenge for a match tonight. Rousey accepted and Flair proceeded to escape and score a pin on Rousey to win the title.
This is some expert Jedi mind trickery here as Triple H and the creative team have the crowd cheering Flair in a way she had not been in quite some time, partly due to the surprise but, also, because they really don't like Rousey that much more.
Of course, it will be interesting to see if Flair can retain that popularity as it becomes clear that she is in her 14th reign as champion and literally just strolled back in and won the gold. With that said, she is a standard-bearer for women's wrestling and has more than earned her spot.
A new look, a new theme song, and a different presentation helped pique interest in The Queen once more. Whether Triple H and Co. can help preserve that interest is the real question moving forward.
As for Rodriguez, she looked very good and was clearly the better of the two wrestlers. It would not be surprising to see her in a high-profile match or position against Flair right around WrestleMania 39.
Result
Rousey defeated Rodriguez to retain; Flair defeated Rousey to win the title

Intercontinental champion Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci hit the ring for a promo segment but Braun Strowman interrupted relatively quickly.
Strowman issued a challenge for an IC title match but Gunther turned to walk away. Strowman insisted and a brawl broke out. The Monster Among Monsters launched himself at The Ring General but crashed through the timekeeper's barricade. Imperium beat him down before Gunther targeted the left arm of his top contender.
Vinci and Kaiser fended off referees and officials but a chair-toting Ricochet chased the heels off.
It appears destined to be Strowman who, potentially, ends Gunther's run. At the very least, is his latest and greatest challenger. Either way, it was nice to see the heel get some heat back by punishing Strowman and potentially injuring him after running like a coward the last handful of times he was in the big man's vicinity.
The inevitable showdown will have heat and, if recent history is any indication, Gunther will probably give Strowman his best match to date.

John Cena may have returned to the ring for the first time in 2022 as part of Friday's main event tag team match but the story of the first half was Sami Zayn, who sought to impress Roman Reigns as The Bloodline representatives battled The Greatest of All Time and Kevin Owens.
The heels isolated and beat down Owens through the commercial break, cutting him off from Cena. When it looked like a hot tag might be coming, The Tribal Chief pulled Cena off the apron.
Cena eventually exploded into the match, wiped out Reigns with an Attitude Adjustment and watched as Owens finished Zayn with a Stunner for the win.
The match was seriously abbreviated, having only 10 minutes once the entrances and final commercials wrapped up. The action was abrupt and rushed, with a brief heat segment on Owens before the Cena hot tag. By the time he finally hit the ring to spark the comeback, it was over.
All of the hype and Cena's involvement was limited to a few moves before it went home.
With that said, the energy he brought to the match and his selflessness when it came to giving Owens the shine was the stuff of a real pro. His involvement may have been short-lived but he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand and really help put over Owens by sharing the spotlight with him and allowing him to get the pin on Zayn.
How will Reigns react to Zayn failing to end the KO problem and, worse, losing the match for The Bloodline? That will be the story to watch heading into 2023.
Result
Cena and Owens defeated Reigns and Zayn
Grade
B, elevated significantly by the fun of it all and the raw energy of Cena, which is majorly missed
